WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF A QUEEN SIZE MATTRESS

When it comes to choosing a new mattress, one of the most important factors to consider is the size. One of the most popular questions when it comes to mattresses, is related to their dimensions.

Queen size mattresses are one of the most popular choices for many reasons. They offer more sleeping space than a Twin or Full-size mattress, but are not as wide as a King or California King size mattress, taking up less of that precious bedroom space.

In this article, we will explore the dimensions of a Queen size mattress, who this is a good mattress size for, as well as what makes a Queen size mattress; so you can make the best choice possible for your unique needs.

What Are The Dimensions Of A Queen Size Mattress?

Before going into all of the details related to Queen size mattresses, let’s take the bull by the horns and answer your most pressing question!

A Queen size mattress is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.

This makes it 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full-size mattress. The extra space can make a significant difference in the quality of the sleep you, and your partner, get each night.

Thickness of a Queen size mattress

When considering the dimensions of a Queen size mattress, it is important to note that the thickness of the mattress can greatly vary. A standard, mid-range price-wise, Queen size mattress is typically 10 to 12 inches thick. Some luxury mattresses are 13 to 15-inches thick. Some ultra luxurious mattresses can reach up to 18 inches, though we don’t think they are always worth the price tag. Anything 10 to 15″-thick, is going to be a good mattress.

Queen size mattress vs other regular size mattresses

The table below gives you a head-to-head comparison of dimensions for a queen size mattress versus most regular size mattresses, without going into the specialty mattresses. Most mattresses are either 75″ or 80″ in length, with varying width. The queen size mattress finds itself in the middle of the pack, making it a versatile bed, working for couples and individuals, and taking up an average amount of space in the bedroom.

Benefits Of A Queen Size Mattress

When looking to purchase a new mattress, you have a wide range of options, as shown in the table above. The size of your room, your sleeping configuration, and personal needs, are often key to determining what size bed will best meet your requirements.

A Queen size mattress is the most common size mattress, though more and more people choose to upgrade to a King size mattress for their master bedroom. With 47% of Americans purchasing Queen size mattresses (spread evenly across age groups), they are a testament to their versatility. A great option for couples without taking up too much space in your room, Queen mattresses work for most.

The additional space provided by a Queen size mattress can provide many benefits, including:

More sleeping space – How many people can sleep on a Queen size mattress?

A queen size mattress comfortably accommodates two adults, making it an excellent choice for couples who want to share a bed without feeling cramped. For single sleepers, you will have plenty of space to spread, or co-sleep with your pet or child, and a Queen size mattress will be a welcome upgrade from a Full size bed.

Better sleep quality

With more space to spread out, a Queen size mattress can help you achieve a more comfortable sleep position, whether you sleep on your side, stomach, or back. A Queen size mattress also provides enough space for you to toss and turn comfortably, reducing the amount of waking up due to space constrains, and reducing the likelihood of waking up with aches and pains.

Room to move – What to look out for

A Queen size mattress can also provide more space to move around, making it easier to get in and out of bed and adjust your position throughout the night. We highly recommend purchasing a Queen size mattress with a reinforced perimeter, which can make the sleeping surface feel up to 20% wider, as it allows each partner to sleep all the way to the edge of the bed without feeling like they’ll roll out. A reinforced perimeter either comes in the form of strengthened coils around the bed, or a thicker and denser foam perimeter.

Types Of Queen Size Mattresses

There are several types of Queen size mattresses available, each with its own unique features, feel, and benefits. Your personal situation and preference will guide which one is best for you. Some of the most common types include:

All-foam mattresses

A memory foam mattress is made of several layers of foams. Its top foams are softer and provide pressure relief to your high-pressure points (shoulders and hips). As you go down into the mattress, increasingly firm foams provide spine-aligning support, as well as support to your high-pressure areas, to ensure your spine and neck are aligned throughout the night.

On a memory foam mattress, you will feel contouring to your body, customized support, and pressure relief. They can be a good option for those who have joint pain or prefer a softer sleeping surface.

Over the years, memory foam mattresses have gotten bad rep for sleeping hot and making their sleepers sweat… body heat got trapped into the foam layers and sleepers were cradled into their own heat. Some negatives also ran around the feeling of being stuck in the foam… Today, most foam mattress manufacturers include mattress covers that pull body heat away from your body, foams that are engineered to sleep cool (i.e., cooling gel infused) and that are responsive to make turning and tossing effortless.

Hybrid mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine the best features of innerspring and all-foam mattresses. They typically feature a layer of foam or memory foam, often with cool-sleeping properties, on top of a thick core of individually-wrapped steel coils, providing both support and comfort.

Your body first hits the softer foam, designed to provide pressure relief, mild contouring, and comfort. You often have the choice of firmness, to best fit your sleeping style and preference. After the first 2 to 6 inches of pressure relief, your body get the spine-aligning and support benefits of the thick and firm layer of coils.

Hybrid mattresses are known for sleeping cooler than foam mattresses. The layer of coils lets plenty of air flow through the mattress, exchanging your body heat for cool air rising from your room into the upper foam layers.

Polymer mattresses

A new kind of mattresses has hit the market a few years ago. Polymer mattresses are made of a very elastic, wide-open, foam that has a very unique feel and does a really good job at sleeping cool and adapting to your body, to provide a sensation of full support. We find it similar to the feeling of zero-gravity, and those mattresses are great for couples with different sleeping styles as they adapt to all body shapes.

Some of the polymer mattresses are made of all polymer, while others are hybrid mattresses with  a layer of coils for extra support and durability.

Innerspring mattresses

Innerspring mattresses are the most traditional type of mattress, featuring coils that provide support and stability. They are often more affordable than other types of mattresses and are a good option for those who prefer a firmer sleeping surface. They unfortunately tend to transfer motion quite a bit, which can make up a sleeper if his/her partner moves a lot at night. Mattress manufacturers are moving away from innerspring mattresses, and they are becoming harder to find, for the health benefit of all. We highly recommend the upgrade to all-foam, hybrid, or polymer mattresses.

Dimensions Of Specialty Queen Size Mattresses

When talking about the dimensions of a Queen size mattress, we typically think of the regular residential Queen size bed. There are however 3 other kinds of Queen size mattresses. While we won’t spend a ton of time on them, they are worth mentioning:

Split Queen mattress – 30″W x 80″L

Split mattresses exit in Queen, King, and California King sizes. They are very useful mattresses if you use an adjustable base, or if you and your partner want to use different mattresses and need them to fit a regular Queen, King, or Cal. King bed frame.

As you probably understood, a Split Queen mattress is exactly half the width of a regular Queen mattress, with the same length as any Queen mattress. A Split Queen mattress is 30″ wide x 80″ long.

RV Queen or Short Queen mattress – 60″W x 74″L

Short Queen mattresses are designed for tight spaces, usually found on boats and RVs. For that reason, a Short Queen is also known as RV Queen. Those refer to a mattress that is equal in width to a regular Queen mattress, but 6 inches shorter, to allow sleepers more space to navigate around their mattress. A Short Queen or RV Queen is 60″ wide and 74″ long.

Olympic Queen mattress – 66″W x 80″L

Olympic Queen mattresses are not very easy to find, as they are fairly custom and most manufacturer stick to the regular Queen. An Olympic Queen mattress is 6 inches wider than a Queen, while keeping the regular 80″ of length. To put it in perspective, the Olympic Queen is still 10 inches narrower than a King mattress.

What Are The Dimensions Of A Queen Size Mattress

Choosing the right mattress size is crucial for a good night’s sleep and a well balanced, calming sleeping environment. A Queen size mattress can be an excellent choice for many reasons. With its 60-inch width and 80-inch length, a Queen mattress provides a good amount of sleeping space for couples, excellent sleep quality if you pick the right mattress for your sleeping style, and more room to move than a Full.

There are also several types of Queen size mattresses available, each with its own unique features and benefits. Make sure to pick the one that feels right for you by reading our different guides under the “Best Mattress” menu section above.
