What's Inside The Nolah Signature 12"

In a nutshell:

  • 2.5″ AirFoam™ on Soft Side
  • 1.5″ supportive foam on Soft Side
  • 7″ high-density base foam
  • Organic cotton cover

In more detail...

2.5″ AirFoam™

Nolah’s AirFoam™ is NOT memory foam and not made with any of the heat-trapping chemicals present in memory foams. AirFoam™ is proven to be 300% more durable, provide 4 times better pressure relief, while sleeping cooler than high-end memory foam. This top layer provides deep pressure relief and prevents hip, shoulder, and lower back pains.

1.5″ Supportive Foam

The Nolah Signature 12″ has a 1.5″ layer of high-resilience foam under the AirFoam that provides extra support to the back and ensures a comfortable night of sleep. This foam is more durable than latex and gives the Nolah Signature 12″ a longer life than most mattresses on the market.

7″ High-Density Base Foam

Nolah uses CertiPUR-US certified foam in its mattresses, making them healthier for our bodies and the environment. The 7″ of high-density foam is a breathable foam that intensifies the support below the contouring upper layers.

Organic Cotton Cover

The Nolah Signature 12″ mattress has a small-stitched unbleached organic cotton cover. A natural and organic product, this cotton is free from harsh chemicals and naturally wicks away moisture for a soft and cool night of sleep.

Nolah Signature 12" Sleep Tests

Everything we felt in one box

Firmness Temperature Maintenance Sleeping Style Bed Base
The Nolah Signature mattress is a softer mattress offering deep contouring while remaining responsive thanks to 1.5" of high-resilience foam, so you never feel stuck in the mattress. We ranked it softness at about a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with enough support from the high-density foam to keep your spine aligned.
The Nolah Signature 12" mattress is engineered to provide a cool night of sleep. It uses the technologically-advanced AirFoam™, that comes filled with billions of air bubbles that help dissipate the heat and looses very little thickness year after year, meaning that your body doesn't get trapped in its own heat-trapped shape. We found the Nolah Original mattress to remain temperature-neutral throughout the night on both sides since the upper layer on both sides is AirFoam™. We tested it in hot Florida weather and my hot-sleeping husband did not complain about heat.
The cover of the Nolah Signature 12" mattress should not be washed. You can spot clean the mattress with mild detergent, clear water, and a cloth. Try blotting the stain, instead of rubbing it.
I can highly recommend the Nolah Signature 12" to side sleepers. A small-weight back sleepers looking for lots of contouring and pressure relief could also have a comfortable night of sleep, but it will be too soft for most back sleepers and all stomach-sleepers. The Nolah AirFoam™ has billions of microscopic air bubbles within its foam, providing a pressure-relief system that targets peak pressure areas and provide more comfort to reduce pain in the hips, shoulders, and lower back area, ideal for side-sleepers.
The Nolah Signature 12" mattress can be laid on any flat surface: flat platform beds, slatted beds, boxsprings or foundation, adjustable beds, or even the ground.

Detailed Nolah Signature 12" Review Conclusion

The Nolah Signature 12″ is an amazing mattress for someone looking for deep pressure relief and some contouring. It is an incredible option for side-sleepers and quite the technological advance in the mattress industry. While laying in 4″ of contouring foam, you will never feel hot, thanks to Nolah’s engineered AirFoam that keeps you cool and with enough responsiveness to never feel stuck in the mattress.

Nolah is disrupting a 40-year old technology with AirFoam™, a product that is more durable, provides 4 times better pressure relief, and sleeps cooler than memory foam. In terms of lifespan, Nolah’s lifetime warranty speaks for itself!

The organic cotton cover is free of harsh chemicals and naturally moisture-wicking. On its soft side, the Nolah Signature’s 3 layers of foam / AirFoam™ help release all of the pressure from a long day’s work and send you to a comfortable cloud that will leave you rejuvenated and rested by morning. You will enjoy cool sleep night after night, and realize that consistent rest leaves you better armed for the day ahead.

Why don’t we look at how all of the pieces come together in the Nolah Signature 12″ and what that means for your rest and sleeping experience.

Who Is Nolah?

Nolah calls itself a “sleep technology company.” It is an online bed-in-a-box company that launched in 2015. All of their products are designed in Denver, CO, and made in the USA. Yet, they are able to keep their prices down and pass on their savings to their consumers – you!

Nolah’s aim is to create tomorrow’s mattress. After realizing that latex was invented in the 1920’s and that the memory foam we still use in mattresses today, had not evolved since the 1970’s, they decided to design superior mattresses by leveraging the latest technologies.

AirFoam™ was born. The Nolah AirFoam™ is 100% temperature neutral, as it does not contain viscoelastic chemicals commonly found in memory foam. It sleeps so cool that it does not require the use of cooling gels in its layers, and has been scientifically-proven to be more durable and provide more pressure relief than its older sister, the memory foam. You will find AirFoam™ in the Nolah Original, Signature, and Evolution.

In August 2021, Nolah came out with its first natural Talalay Latex mattress and added a kid Latex mattress as well – the Nolah Nurture 10 – which is flippable to grow with the child!! The Nolah Natural uses 11 inches of natural, organic, and recycled materials to protect your body and our planet.

Lastly, Nolah cuts the middle man and truly passes on the savings to its buyers, with all Nolah Original 10″ mattresses well below $1,000 after discount and Signature 12″ mattresses in the low to mid-$1,000 range in larger sizes, it has come out with a luxury hybrid mattress – the Evolution – in November 2020, priced in the mid-$1,000 range after discounts, and the natural Latex Nolah Natural in August 2021, priced a little lower.

What Is Inside The Nolah Signature 12"?

The Nolah Signature 12″ is a 12-inch mattress, ideal for side-sleepers. While all 4 layers are always present, you truly sleep on the top 3 layers. Those layers of foam work together to bring support thanks to the 7″ of high-density foam that provide support and ideal spine alignment. The upper layers of foam bring the right amount of sinking and contouring to relieve pressure in your hip and shoulder areas, while keeping you temperature-neutral and comfortable throughout the night.

2.5-In AirFoam™

The top layer is 2.5 inches of Nolah’s famous AirFoam™, which gives the body is fairly deep and soft sink, allowing the body to rest with low pressure under the shoulders, hips, and lower back. For side-sleepers especially, the AirFoam allows the hips and shoulders to sink in deeper than the rest of the bodyaligning the entire body without pressuring areas that could cause pain when laying flat on one level.

This new material was scientifically proven to relieve 4 times more pressure than regular memory foam. The AirFoam is fairly low density, with billions of air bubbles trapped in it, keeping you cool by channeling the heat emitted by your body through and down to the lower layers. And since there is less sagging than with regular memory foam, the heat does not get trapped underneath and around you, making this mattress ideal when living in hot climates or for hot sleepers.

1.5-In High Resilience Foam

The center layer is 1.5 inches of high-resilience foam. That foam is stronger and more durable than latex, eliminating sagging over time. It also provides a healthy and responsive bounce so you never have the feeling of being stuck in a thick memory foam. That inch and a half of foam makes turning around easy and adds years of life to the Nolah Signature. It is a nice transition layer with the third layer in the mattress.

7-In High-Density Foam

That layer is 7 inches of high-density foam. That base grounds the mattress with the firmness that balances out the upper 2 layers’ contouring and plushness. It is the foundation layer that brings support to your back, while being breathable enough to channel your body heat down and outwards. On the soft side of the Nolah Signature 12″, it is the last layer your body will feel, though another inch of AirFoam hides underneath it, to bring softness and mild contouring to the firm side of the mattress.

The Mattress Cover

The Nolah Signature 12″‘s cover is a small-stitched square pattern of unbleached organic cotton, that is soft and very even to the touch. The organic cotton does not use harsh chemicals and is softer on our planet and healthier to our body. When you think about where you lay your body for 6 to 10 hours a day, an organic cotton cover is always going to be a good idea!

How Does The Nolah Signature 12" Sleep?

Firmness

The Nolah Signature 12″ is on the softer side of the firmness scale and I would rate it about a 4 / 10. You will find a deep sink – there are 4 inches of softer foam before hitting the high-density foam. It provides softness and contouring with bounce properties that won’t let you feel stuck in the upper layers

Sleeping Style

The Nolah Signature is ideal and highly recommended for side-sleepers. Its deep sink releases much of the pressure in the main pressure areas of the hips and shoulders, meaning that, when laying on your side, you will find your body is in a very natural position, where the hips and shoulders sink a little deeper than the rest of your body.

This is also a great mattress for heavier weights, giving a few extra inches of softness for great spine alignment, some extra depth of high-resilience foam to respond quickly to movement and no feeling of being stuck, and 7 inches of very supportive high-density of foam. The AirFoam is also proven to be 300% more durable, so you won’t notice much sagging from use.

If you are a light-weight back sleeper who enjoys soft mattresses or need extra pressure relief, you will enjoy the softness provided by a think layer of AirFoam for comfort, with the backing of high-density foam for ultimate support and healthy spinal alignment.

I do not recommend the Nolah Signature to heavier back-sleepers or any stomach-sleepers. It will be too soft to properly align your body and may result in morning pain.

Temperature

Many memory foam mattresses use cooling gel as a way to keep sleepers cool at night, since memory foam lacks breathability and traps the heat around and below its sleepers.

Nolah’s foam and AirFoam™ allow the heat to escape and provide a temperature-neutral sleeping experience. We sleep tested the mattress during hot Florida nights and felt neither hot, nor cold. The Nolah Signature’s temperature is best described as neutral and comfortable, without the need to use cooling gel.

Motion Transfer

The Nolah Signature 12″ did really well with motion transfer. Its 12 inches of foam isolate most of the motion transfer and you shouldn’t be woken up by a moving partner.

How Do I Care For The Nolah Signature 12" Mattress?

The best way to tend to a stain on your Nolah cover is by using water, a mild detergent, and blot the stain with a cloth. Do not rub the stain as you’d risk making it larger. A gentle blot on fresh stains should help you clean them up.

How Does The Nolah's Return Policy Work?

While some might criticize Nolah’s return policy, I think it is a smart one. Getting used to a new mattress can take some time, especially if you switch to foam from a previous pillow-top for example.

Nolah has a 120-night at-home sleep trial. In other words, it allows free returns within 120 days if you are unhappy with your Nolah Signature mattress. But returns aren’t allowed until after you have passed a 30-night testing period. Nolah asks that you give their mattress a full night of sleep before returning it, and I agree that it could take a couple of weeks for your body to adapt to a new sleeping shape.

If, after 30 days, you are still unhappy or uncomfortable with your Nolah mattress, you have until 120 days to return it, free of charge, no questions asked.
