What's Inside The Honeybird Weighted Blanket

In a nutshell:

  • Throw-size weighted blanket
  • Double-sided blanket cover
  • Glass beads / polyester filling weighted insert

In more detail...

Throw-Size Weighted Blanket

Honeybird’s weighted blankets are throw size only (51″x75″) to ensure the weight is concentrated over the body, and not laying on the bed / couch, or even falling on the ground. It is a good size to use on top of your regular duvet and allows you and your partner to each use the weight best fit for your body weight.

Double-Sided Blanket Cover

The blanket cover is double sided with a cotton side, laying against your skin. Cotton is a naturally moisture-wicking material and it does a great job at keeping you cool at night. The upper side is a soft and plush proprietary fabric blend that looks great and modern, and feels soft to the touch.

Weighted Insert

The Honeybird weighted insert is filled with glass beads and polyester filling. The glass beads are only .75mm, making them super fine, and dense enough to create weight without the extra volume. The beads are made of recycled glass and secured between layers of polyfill, so you really don’t feel them. The glass beads are secured in 4 inch pockets arranged in a diamond pattern to ensure the weight is evenly spread throughout the night.

Honeybird Weighted Blanket Sleep Test

Everything we felt in one box

Softness Temperature Maintenance Breathability Weight
We sleep tested the 15-lb Honeybird Weighted Blanket with cover. The cover is cotton on the side closest to the body. While it is not the softest cotton, you will most likely lay it on top of a flat sheet or duvet. The upper side of the Honeybird Weighted Blanket is the one you will mostly feel. It is made of a plush double-knit proprietary fabric that is soft to the touch, and looks quite luxurious.
With a cotton blanket cover, you will find that the Honeybird Weighted Blanket does not sleep hot. It is a great option for the hot sleepers who are looking for the extra comforting weight, while staying cool at night.
Easily one of my favorite features of the Honeybird Weighted Blanket, and an amazing competitive advantage - the blanket cover is machine washable! The weighted insert should be spot-cleaned only.
Weighted blankets made of glass bead weighted inserts tend to be less breathable than hand-knit weighted blankets. The Honeybird Weighted Blanket, however, has an outer layer of cotton, helping with moisture-wicking.
We sleep tested the 15-lb Honeybird Weighted Blanket, which is sized for one person. Honeybird sells a 10-lb, 15-ln, and 20-lb option. The brand recommends the 10-lb blanket if you weigh 65 to 129lbs. The 15-lb blanket will best fit folks weighting 130-199 lbs, and the 20-lb blanket is ideal if you weigh more than 200 lbs.

The Honeybird Weighted Blanket comes in 3 sizes – 10, 15, and 20lbs. While the website mentions a Grey or Navy color option, it looks like it is only available in Grey at the moment, which I think is a really cute grey, that mixes very nicely with most colored sheets.

You can choose to purchase the weighted blanket only, or add the removable and washable cover.

Detailed Honeybird Weighted Blanket Review Conclusion

We have been sleep testing the 15-lb Honeybird Weighted Blanket for over 2 weeks and think that Honeybird has come up with a fantastic product.

I highly recommend taking the Blanket Quiz before purchasing your Honeybird Blanket. It is done online, takes a few second and will help you make a decision on which blanket weight is right for you. The Quiz recommended that I get the 15-lb option with cover, which is the one I ordered, and the weight has worked really well for me.

Why don’t we look at what makes Honeybird and their weighted blankets in more detail?

Who Is Honeybird?

I am a big fan of companies that were started to fill a gap in the market.

The founders of Honeybird were not happy with what they were finding on the market, and they decided to design their own weighted blanket. They spent 2 years engineering a blanket that solved several design flaws and quickly became a weighted blanket specialist. They only make one product, and they make it well. They offer 3 weight options and 1 cover for their weighted blanket.

What Is Inside The Honeybird Weighted Blanket?

The Honeybird Weighted Blanket can be ordered with, or without the blanket cover. If you order the blanket cover, you will receive both the weighted insert, as well as the cover.

The weighted insert is made of micro glass beads, so small and well protected in a polyfil, that you won’t feel them. They are made of recycled glass and are only .75mm, making them dense enough to provide the weight without the bulkiness. They are also a quiet option and you won’t hear any noise when moving the blanket.

The glass beads are secured inside 4-inch grid pockets. While most competitors use an 8-in grid, the smaller stitched pockets designed by Honeybird ensure that the weight is evenly distributed. We felt no shifting in weight, thanks to the polyfill that keeps the glass beads in place.

Another way that Honeybird found to ensure the weight does not move during the night, is through the use of 8 ties inside the blanket cover to hold the weighted insert in place.

If you order the blanket cover, it comes 2-sided. The side closest to your body is made of cotton –  a naturally moisture-wicking material ensuring cool sleep. The upper side has a very soft and plush feel to it. It is a double-knit proprietary fabric that looks great and has a very cozy feeling.

How Does The Honeybird Weighted Blanket Sleep?

Softness

I can’t say that the cotton side of the blanket cover is extremely soft. It is a lighter cotton to ensure cool sleep, and has the crispier feel you’d expect for cooling cotton.

You will however, mostly feel the upper side of the blanket, as you lay your arms on it. That top side is soft and plush, and has a very nice and cozy feel to it.

The weighted insert is very comfortable. The glass beads are so fine, and encased in a polyfill, that you won’t feel any hardness, or even the beads are all.

Temperature

The side of the blanket cover touching you is made in cotton. It ensures extra breathability and will leave you sleeping cool at night. You are getting the benefits of even deep-pressure weight, without the overheating that can sometimes come with it.

Weight

Honeybird has put everything in place to ensure an evenly-distributed weight in their weighted blankets.

The glass beads are secured between layers of polyfill, and enclosed in 4-inch grid pockets. Additionally, the weighted blanket is held in place with 8 ties inside the cover, ensuring an evenly-distributed weight throughout the night.

The weight does not shift inside the blanket, and you will benefit for an even deep-pressure stimulation to your entire body. Since the Honeybird Weighted Blanket is throw size, you won’t be sharing the weight of the blanket with a partner, or even your bed. You can expect it to stay in place on top and around your body the entire night. I would definitely stick to the 10% of body weight rule-of-thumb when picking a weight for your blanket. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check the last session in this review.

How Do I Care For My Honeybird Weighted Blanket?

Honeybird has designed a weighted blanket cover that is easy to care for. Simply unzip and machine wash it. I always recommend washing with like colors.

The weighted insert should only be spot-cleaned. Use a wet cloth and mild detergent and blot any stain you’re trying to tend to. Avoid rubbing to not make the stain larger.

Ideal Weight For Weighted Blankets

The general rule of thumb for the ideal weight for weighted blankets is 10% of your body weight, plus or minus a couple of pounds.

Let’s look at an example: you weigh 150 lbs and 10% of your body weight is 15 lbs. If you add or remove a couple of pounds, the ideal weight for your weighted blanket would likely be 13 lbs to 17 lbs.

The other way to think about this is to look at a 15-lb weighted blanket. It would comfortably soothe a person weighing between 130 and 170 pounds.

Your preference in terms of weight and hugging sensation will impact the ideal weight for your weighted blanket. Most importantly, you need to be able to remove the blanket from your body unassisted.
