Nolah has engineered an all-foam mattress with the feel and properties of a hybrid mattress. Let’s take a closer look at our thoughts on this very innovative mattress, and everything that hides inside this 12″ foam mattress!

What's Inside The Nolah Signature Hybrid Mattress

In a nutshell:

  • Cooling organic cotton cover
  • 2″ plush contouring AirFoam™
  • 2″ breathable response foam
  • 8″ 3 layers of AirFoam™ Flex Dynamic Support System

In more detail...

Cooling Organic Cotton Cover

Organic cotton is not only ultra soft, it is breathable, clean, and safe to sleep on. We love the diamond pattern and ivory color of the organic cotton mattress cover on the Nolah Signature Hybrid. It looks straight out of nature, has no chemical smell, and feels luxuriously cushiony!

Thanks to organic cotton’s natural ability to wick away your body moisture, you will sleep cooler on this cover and never feel like you are overheating.

2″ Plush Contouring AirFoam™

The second layer is 2 inches of Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam™, Nolah’s patented foam we’ve come to love in all Nolah mattresses. In the Nolah Signature Hybrid, it provides 2 inches of pressure relief and luxurious contouring.

Your body sinks in those top 2 inches and the AirFoam™ gives you the feeling of a full-body hug, without the impression of being stuck in soft foam or getting hot.

2″ Breathable Response Foam

The next 2 inches are made of a highly-breathable and responsive foam, which balances the soft pressure-reliving AirFoam™ above.

That active response foam is more breathable than nearly any other foam on the mattress. It allows air to freely circulate up to the AirFoam™, while channeling warmth from your body down into the lower layers.

Its responsive means that the mattress regains its original shape upon you switching positions, so you never feel stuck in your Nolah Signature Hybrid and moving at night is easy and never an effort.

8″ 3 Layers Of AirFoam™ Flex Dynamic Support System

The next 3 layers are grouped in one category. The AirFoam™ Flex is responsive and flexible, mimicking the feel of steel coils, while remaining foam. If you prefer all-foam mattresses, you keep the feeling of foam while benefitting from the properties of coils.

This ground-breaking all-foam hybrid design makes it easy to toss and turn at night, while providing the excellent motion isolation properties of an all-foam mattress.

The Nolah Signature Hybrid is the only mattress we know of, that uses 3 layers of foam to give you the benefits of coils, without adding an ounce of steel to their mattress.

The top and bottom layers are designed with micro-cut waves facing a firmer, high-density, AirFoam™ layer in the center.

We found those innovative three layers of foam to provide excellent support and great spinal alignment.

Nolah Signature Hybrid Sleep Tests

Everything we felt in one box

Firmness Temperature Maintenance Sleeping Style Bed Base
The Nolah Signature Hybrid has a very unique feel. It gives you the softness and cushioning expected of an all-foam mattress, with the bounce and support typically reserved for hybrid mattresses with a core of steel coils. We rated the Signature Hybrid a 6 / 10 on the firmness scale, placing it right around the average firmness (6.5). It offers quite a bit of cushioning and conforming, earning it a tad bit softer than the average mattress.
The Nolah Signature Hybrid sleeps temperature neutral, meaning that you will not get hot on warm nights, nor cold on cool nights. Its layers of foam are engineered to maintain a temperature that works with your body. The purpose of the cover is to wick away the heat emitted by your body and to channel it down into its foams and outward. We felt cool throughout the night and, at no point, did it feel like heat was trapped underneath or around our bodies.
The cover of the Nolah Signature Hybrid mattress cannot be washed. You can spot clean the mattress with mild detergent, clear water, and a cloth. Try blotting the stain, instead of rubbing it.
The Nolah Signature Hybrid mattress is a very different mattress than the Nolah Signature 12". Thanks to the support and dynamic response provided by the 3 coil-like layers of foam, nearly all sleepers will sleep comfortably on the all-foam Signature Hybrid mattress. Side-sleepers will love the pressure-relief properties, while back sleepers under 220 pounds will enjoy the healthy combination of pressure relief and support. We recommend the Nolah Signature Hybrid to light-weight stomach sleepers (under 180 lbs), with a preference for softer mattresses.
The Nolah Signature Hybrid mattress can be laid on any flat surface: flat platform beds, slatted beds, boxsprings or foundation, adjustable beds, or even the ground.

Detailed Nolah Signature Hybrid Review Conclusion

We love seeing mattress manufacturers think outside of the box and come up with innovative ways to make mattresses that solve a hole in the market.

If you are a lover of all-foam mattresses but also enjoy the bounce and support that coils bring to hybrid mattresses, the Nolah Signature Hybrid is exactly what you are a looking for. An all-foam mattress that reacts like a hybrid but feels as cushiony as a foam mattress.

Who Is Nolah?

Nolah calls itself a “sleep technology company.” It is an online bed-in-a-box company that launched in 2015. All of their products are designed in Denver, CO, and made in the USA. Yet, they are able to keep their prices down and pass on their savings to their consumers – you!

Nolah’s aim is to create tomorrow’s mattress. After realizing that latex was invented in the 1920’s and that the memory foam we still use in mattresses today, had not evolved since the 1970’s, they decided to design superior mattresses by leveraging the latest technologies.

AirFoam™ was born. The Nolah AirFoam™ is 100% temperature neutral, as it does not contain viscoelastic chemicals commonly found in memory foam. It sleeps so cool that it does not require the use of cooling gels in its layers, and has been scientifically-proven to be more durable and provide more pressure relief than its older sister, the memory foam. You will find AirFoam™ in the Nolah Original, Signature, and Evolution.

In August 2021, Nolah came out with its first natural Talalay Latex mattress and added a kid Latex mattress as well – the Nolah Nurture 10 – which is flippable to grow with the child!! The Nolah Natural uses 11 inches of natural, organic, and recycled materials to protect your body and our planet.

Lastly, Nolah cuts the middle man and truly passes on the savings to its buyers, with all Nolah Original 10″ mattresses well below $1,000 after discount and Signature 12″ mattresses in the low to mid-$1,000 range in larger sizes, it has come out with a luxury hybrid mattress – the Evolution – in November 2020, priced in the mid-$1,000 range after discounts, and the natural Latex Nolah Natural in August 2021, priced a little lower.

What Is Inside The Nolah Signature Hybrid?

The Nolah Signature Hybrid is made of 6 layers of foams and uses Nolah’s patented AirFoam™. While the name can confuse some, this is an all-foam mattress that allies the cozy comfort and motion isolation of foam mattresses, with the supportive, spine-aligning, strong edge supporting properties of a hybrid mattress.

We have loved the pressure relief of the Nolah Signature Hybrid, without having to compromise on the support and stability sometimes lacking in all-foam mattresses.

If you are a lover of foam mattresses for its coziness and contouring softness, you can now get all of that with stronger support, healthy response, and of course the outstanding cooling that comes with AirFoam™.

Let’s take a look at what hides inside the Nolan Signature Hybrid.

Cooling Organic Cotton Mattress Cover

The Nolah Signature Hybrid’s mattress cover is made of organic cotton, making it an ultra-soft and breathable layer to lay your body on. The organic cotton draws the extra heat away from your body and allows for a comfier and cooler sleep. Organic cotton is the way Nolah has been headed in recent months and we love that they stuck with it in this new mattress.

The cover is ivory and diamond-patterned, giving a feeling of nature entering your bedroom. We love the design and the feel of it!

 2″ Plush Contouring Nolah AirFoam™

The first layer of foam underneath the organic cotton mattress cover is 2 inches of Nolah’s very own AirFoam™. AirFoam™ is a proprietary foam layer that is NOT memory foam. It is sleeps temperature neutral by drawing your excess body heat away from your body, and has enough responsiveness so you never feel stuck in the mattress.

It does not loose any of its contouring and pressure relieving properties however. But you will never feel stuck or overheat on AirFoam™.

In the Nolah Signature Hybrid, this first layer feels wonderfully soft and gently contouring, bringing you all of the coziness and feel of a gentle hug. But again, it is responsive enough to allow you to effortlessly toss and change position! This is the layer that ensures that high-pressure areas (typically hips and shoulders) receive proper pressure relief to sleep free of pains and aches. This is especially important for side-sleepers to not feel crushed by their mattress.

2″ Ultra-Breathable Active Response Foam

The second layer of foam is made of durable foam that provides further pressure relief, while starting to support your bones and muscles. Its active responsiveness ensures that the mattress bounces back to its original shape, ensuring your movements at night are free of effort and that you always lay on a flat mattress with no indent.

Because this foam is engineered to be extremely breathable, it further allows cool air to flow through the mattress, while channeling the warmth of your body heat down the lower layers.

3 Layers of AirFoam™ Flex Dynamic Support System

The next 3 layers in the Nolah Signature Hybrid make up 8 of the 12 inches in the mattress. Eight inches is a fairly regular thickness for coils in hybrid mattresses. Those three layers work together to provide similar properties to those of steel coils, while remaining 100% foam.

Layers 4 and 6 use a micro-cut waves pattern, englobing layer 5, which is made of high-density AirFoam™ HD. This system works in synch with your body, adjusting to its movements to provide the support your spine needs to stay aligned through the night.

Those 3 layers provide increased flexibility and responsiveness to ensure you are free to move during the night, without loosing out on the motion isolation typical of foam!

How Does The Nolah Signature Hybrid Sleep?

Firmness

We rated the Nolah Signature Hybrid mattress a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. We found it to be a very interesting mixture of softness right underneath our bodies (about 2 to 3 inches of contouring softness) with a healthy dose of firmness coming right underneath.

We woke up feeling rested and pain free, thanks for the perfect mixture of pressure relief and spine-aligning firmness. This rating places the Nolah Signature Hybrid right in the middle of the pack, with an industry average firmness between 6 and 6.5.

Sleeping Style

We first recommend the Nolah Signature Hybrid for side-sleepers. They will find the perfect amount of pressure relief in their shoulder and hip areas, while quickly hitting supportive layers for those same areas. Side-sleepers will sleep with an aligned spine and the perfect amount of pressure relief to avoid pains and aches in their high-pressure zones.

Back-sleepers under 220 pounds will enjoy the healthy combination of pressure relief and spine-aligning firmness to sleep comfortably through the night. As back-sleepers lay on the bed, they will find that the original softness upon sitting down becomes a well balanced firmness that evenly spreads the weight of their body across the sleeping surface.

We only recommend the Nolah Signature Hybrid to lower-weight stomach-sleepers who have a personal preference for softer mattresses. This mattress will likely be too soft for most stomach-sleepers and we recommend the Nolah Evolution in Firm firmness to our stomach-sleepers.

Temperature

The Nolah Signature Hybrid does not require the use of any cooling gel, plugged-in mechanism, or harsh chemicals, to provide a consistent night of cool sleep.

The proprietary Nolah AirFoam™ is infused with graphite to enhance its cooling properties. The organic cotton cover is extra breathable and efficiently conducts the heat away from the body, and the different layers of foam are engineered to allow cool air to flow through the mattress and up to the upper foam.

You can expect the Nolah Signature Hybrid to sleep temperature neutral throughout the night, so you are never cold on cool nights, nor hot on warm nights.

Motion Transfer

The beauty of the Nolah Signature Hybrid is that it provides the support and adjustment to your movements that steel coils provide, while keeping the extraordinary motion isolation of foam. We highly recommend the Nolah Signature Hybrid to couples, as the movement of one partner will not disturb the sleep on the other sleeper.

How Do I Care For The Nolah Signature Hybrid Mattress?

The cover of the Nolah Signature Hybrid is not removable and cannot be thrown in the washing machine. The best way to tend to a stain is to use water, a mild detergent, and blot the stain with a cloth. Do not rub the stain as you’d risk making it larger. A gentle blot on fresh stains should help you clean them up.

How Does The Nolah's Return Policy Work?

While some might criticize Nolah’s return policy, I think it is a smart one. Getting used to a new mattress can take some time, especially if you switch to foam from a previous pillow-top for example.

Nolah has a 120-night at-home sleep trial. In other words, it allows free returns within 120 days if you are unhappy with your Nolah Evolution mattress. But returns aren’t allowed until after you have passed a 30-night testing period. Nolah asks that you give their mattress a full night of sleep before returning it, and I agree that it could take a couple of weeks for your body to adapt to a new sleeping shape.

If, after 30 days, you are still unhappy or uncomfortable with your Nolah mattress, you have until 120 days to return it, free of charge, no questions asked.
