In more detail...

Washable UltraDry Pillowtop Cover

The Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress, like all Emma mattresses, has a removable mattress cover designed to prevent hot sleepers from overheating and sweating at night. Its UltraDry cover is engineered to be moisture-wicking, wicking away your excess body heat, and making it easier for your body to remain temperature neutral.

On the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress, it is a thick pillowtop cover, as it lays on top of the layer of foam below, making for a cozy and gently contouring cover.

We love that it comes with a zipper and can be fully removed to be washed in the washing machine on warm.

AIRGOCELL Hypersoft Memory Foam

The first layer of foam under the cover, is Emma’s very own AIRGOCELL hypersoft memory foam. A soft, open-cell, foam, it is pierced by billions of air holes, allowing air to flow in and out of it to further keep you cool. The body heat absorbed through the UltraDry cover easily dissipates through that layer, and gets channels further down into the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress.

This top foam layer provides all of the pressure relief your body needs, as well as gentle softness for comfort.

Zoned CliMax Transition Memory Foam

The CliMax Transition layer is made of a firmer memory foam that transitions your body from the high pressure relieving AIRGOCELL foam to the firmer layer of coils. It is designed with 5 zones, providing pressure relief and support to the 100 different points in your body, as they need it to be aligned.

4.7-Inch Reinforced Perimeter Coils

The support and firmness of the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress comes from 4.7 inches of pocketed coils. The coils decompress independently of each other in order to isolate your partner’s motion. Coils are also an excellent layer for hot sleepers, as it lets plenty of air flow in and out of the mattress. You will find cool room air rising up to the upper foam layers, while heat from your body finds an easy escape route.

Around the perimeter of the coils, you will find a thick, high-density foam, providing edge support so you can sleep from side-to-side without feeling like you’re rolling out. It is also helpful if you need extra stability while sitting on your bedside to get in and out of bed.

HRX Supreme High-Density Foam

The bottom-most layer in the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress is a layer of high-density, which provides stability and durability to the mattress, while giving a quiet outlet for the coils to decompress into.

No Fiberglass

Fiberglass can be a dangerous material, unfortunately found in many mattresses and used as fire retardant. The Emma mattresses are guaranteed free of fiberglasss.

Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress Sleep Tests

Everything we felt in one box

Firmness Temperature Maintenance Sleeping Style Bed Base
We ranked the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Slightly firmer than the Emma Original Mattress, it is average in firmness for the mattress industry. We found it to be softer than the average hybrid mattress, thanks to a soft and contouring layer of foam at its very top.
The Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress uses several proprietary materials engineered to sleep temperature neutral. Its mattress cover wicks away your body's moisture while your body heat is channeled down the top foam layer, which is open cell and allows for heat conductivity and exchange. Additionally, plenty of air flows in and out of the mattress, thanks to its layer of coils.
The Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress is very easy to keep clean. With a zipper all around, it is easy to remove the mattress cover for washing. You can throw it in the washing machine on hot (140 F / 60 C) and let it air dry. In case of smaller stains, simply blot with a clean cloth, water, and a mild detergent.
We recommend the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress for most side-sleepers and all back sleepers. Stomach sleepers under 200 lbs and who like softer mattresses will enjoy the CliMax mattress as well.
The Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress can be installed on any hard base, as well as adjustable bases. As long as your Emma Mattress lays on a platform bed, slats, box spring, or any other firm bed base, including the floor, you will be fine. The recommended base for the Emma Mattress is a slatted base, with slats spread no further than 3 inches.

Detailed Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress Review Conclusion

Emma Sleep is an impressive company that has established itself in markets around the world, offering slightly different mattresses in each country, to meet the demand and expectations of the people they serve. In this review, we sleep tested the Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress, the coil / foam combo spin on the Emma Original mattress.

We love that Emma Sleep uses only CertiPUR-US certified foams, making the Emma Mattress a safe mattress to bring into your home and to sleep and breathe on. Because of their size and global operations, they are able to offer a good quality mattress at a very reasonable price. We were most impressed with the weight limit of 1,000 lbs on the Emma CliMax Hybrid. This makes it an excellent choice for sleepers of all weights and sizes.

Let’s take a deeper look at everything we felt while testing the Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress.

Who Is Emma Sleep?

Emma Sleep is a German mattress company, established in 2015 in Frankfurt, Germany. Still headquartered in Germany, it currently sells mattresses in over 30 countries on 5 continents. It is probably the most widely-available mattress brand around the world, is known as the “European mattress” in the bedding industry, and can be found in over 4 million bedrooms across the planet!

In Germany, Emma Sleep offers 4 mattresses, several toppers, bed furniture, pillows, bed foundations, bed sheets, and many more sleeping and bedding accessories. In the Emma U.S. store, you will find the all-foam Emma Original Mattress and its premium hybrid counterpart, the Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress, as well as a wide range of bed frames, a pillow and a mattress protector.

With over 200 employees, Emma engineers its mattresses in Germany and in the local markets, with an in-house R&D department that develops foam that work together to provide the sleeping experience they’re working towards. Each international market sells its own version of the Emma mattress – fitting each country’s preferences and size requirements. A few constants across the board, is the use of Certi-PUR US certified foams, a strive for spinal alignment, and a passion to develop proprietary foams that fit the Emma requirements for comfort, health, and a lower price for its sleepers.

What Is Inside The Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress?

The Emma Mattress is 11.5 inches of steel coils and CertiPUR-US certified foams, which certifies that they are engineered without any ozone-depleting chemicals and safe from VOCs, formaldehyde, and phthalates. Emma Sleep also certifies that their mattresses are free of fiberglass, which can be a danger when the mattress cover is damaged and fiberglass flies into the air before being breathed in.

We love that you get three layers of proprietary materials in the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress. Those foams and the mattress cover, are engineered by Emma and not available in any other mattresses.

Let’s look at each Emma Mattress layer in more detail.

Washable UltraDry Pillowtop Cover

The Emma UltraDry mattress cover is a polyester blend engineered to be breathable and wick away your body’s moisture as it appears over night. It allows your body to remain cool and dry by thermo-regulating its own temperature, giving you a comfortable night of sleep no matter your room temperature and whether you are a hot or cold sleeper.

We love that the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress has a zipper all around, to easily remove and wash the UltraDry cover. Throw it in the washing machine on hot (140F / 60C) and let it air dry before re-zipping. This allows for a clean sleeping surface, minimizing the build up of dust mites, mold, and mildew, making it a safer mattress for those with allergies, asthma, and/or skin conditions.

1″ AIRGOCELL Hypersoft Memory Foam

The first layer of foam sits atop the second layer, giving the Emma CliMax Hyrbid mattress a luxurious pillowtop feel.

Emma’s AIRGOCELL Hypersoft memory foam provides deep pressure relief and cozy body contouring, while enhancing the mattress’ breathability and cool sleeping properties.

AIRGOCELL Hypersoft is an open-cell foam, pierced by millions of tiny air bubbles, which help further draw your body heat from the mattress cover, down into the Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress’ lower layers, and letting cool air from the coils raise up to the mattress cover, furthering the cool sleep properties of the mattress.

2″ Zoned CliMax Transition Memory Foam

The second layer of foam transitions your body from soft pressure relief to the firm coil layer. It is zoned – with 5 firmness zones and 100 supporting points – to ensure that each area of your body receives the support and/or pressure relief it needs to lay in a healthy and aligned position.

4.7″ Reinforced Perimeter Coils

The layer providing the most support, and creating the Emma CliMax Hybrid’s firmness, is a layer of steel coils. The coils are individually encased, ensuring low motion transfer without losing on the strong support, cooling, and responsiveness properties of coils.

We like that Emma takes the extra step in running a layer of thick and firm foam around the perimeter of the coils. It prevents you from feeling the coils while running your body along the side of your mattress, but mostly provides extra support around the perimeter. That layer of perimeter foam allows you to sleep from side to side and makes it easy to get in and out of bed by way of sitting on the side of your mattress. You can expect minimum sagging.

HRX Supreme High-Density Foam

The bottom-most layer inside the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress is made of very high-density foam. It provides an outlet for the coils to decompress into, as well as guarantees durability and stability to the mattress.

How Does The Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress Sleep?

Firmness

We rated the Emma Mattress a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making it just a tad bit firmer than the average mattress. If you are someone who enjoys pressure relief with mild body contouring, but who values spinal support, you will surely enjoy the Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress.

Sleeping Style

We recommend the Emma Mattress to all back sleepers. Back sleepers will find that they receive the right amount of targeted support down the entire body, and will enjoy a comfortable and soft body contouring before hitting the supportive layer of coils. We recommend the Emma CliMax Hybrid to back sleepers of all weights.

Most side sleepers will find enough softness and sink in the CliMax Hybrid, to really enjoy the balance of pressure relief and support. You will find plenty of cushioning and contouring around the hip and shoulder areas, without sacrificing the support your spine and high-pressure areas need. If you are a light side-sleeper (130 lbs or less), you may prefer the softer feel of the Emma Original Mattress. If you are a heavier side-sleeper (220 lbs or more), you may require a little more support, unless you have a preference for plusher mattresses.

Lastly, only stomach sleepers up to 180 to 200 lbs, or those who have a preference for softer mattresses, should choose the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress. We typically recommend mattresses of at least 7.5/10 on the firmness scale to stomach sleepers, as firmer mattresses will help align the spine and prevent curving of the lower back.

Temperature

The Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress uses 3 engineered ways to keep its sleepers cool at night. The mattress cover is made to wick away extra body moisture and to help your body auto-regulate its own temperature.

The first layer of AIRGOCELL Hypersoft memory foam is open cell (pierced with millions of air bubbles), allowing your body’s excess heat to be pulled away from your body, and staying extra cool from the room-temperature air flowing from the coils up.

Lastly, the coils let plenty of air exchange through the mattress – your hot body air will flow out, while cool room air flows in and up towards the mattress cover.

We found the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress to sleep temperature neutral. It is a good option for hot and cold sleepers alike and we did not experience sweating during our sleep test.

Motion Transfer

All-foam mattresses typically perform better than hybrid mattresses on the motion transfer test. We found however, that the Emma CliMax Hybrid mattress isolates a lot of motion, thanks to its top layer of very soft foam, on top of a second layer of motion-isolating foam. Most people would not be bothered by a moving partner while sleeping on the bed.

How Do I Care For The Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress?

The Emma CliMax Hybrid Mattress is very easy to care for. Its UltraDry mattress cover can be fully removed by unzipping it first. Once removed, you can machine wash the cover on warm (140 F / 60 C) and we recommend letting to air dry.

In case of smaller stains, simply blot with a clean cloth, water, and a mild detergent. Never rub a stain, as to not spread it further.

We love seeing mattresses with removable and washable covers. They are especially useful to those suffering from allergies, asthma, and/or skin conditions. Mattresses attracts the development of dust mites, mold, and mildew, especially is wet and warm environments, and being able to thoroughly wash a mattress cover can make a world of difference to someone suffering from those ailments.
