BEST FIBERGLASS FREE MATTRESS

Our Top Picks - Updated Yearly

Since the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission started regulated flammability of mattresses in 2007, many mattress manufacturers have moved away from unhealthy chemical-based fire barriers to a slightly healthier, though potentially very dangerous material – fiberglass. Did you know that many bedrooms are 2 to 3 times more polluted than the air outside of your home?

Fiberglass is often used by mattress manufacturers inside mattress covers to meet fire safety standards. It poses a dangerous health risk when the mattress cover is damaged (even just regular wear and tear) or unzipped, and fiberglass is released into the air.

According to the CDC, fiberglass “is a known respiratory, skin and eye irritant and an asthmagen.” As fiberglass enters your mouth, nose, and lungs, it can irritate or damage your lungs, and cause other harms such as vomiting, ashtma-like symptoms, or irritation of the skin and eyes.

Thankfully, more and more U.S. based mattress manufacturers are using healthy alternatives to fiberglass – wool being the most widely used fire barrier in upper-end mattresses. Let’s take a look at which mattresses made this year’s list of Best Fiberglass Free Mattress!

If you end up on this page, kuddos for putting in the research prior to buying a new mattress. Since mattress manufacturers are not obliged to disclose the full list of materials going into their mattresses, it is fairly difficult to find accurate information online. Note that, once you receive your mattress, you should check the attached tags for full disclosure. However, if you can ensure that you are receiving a fiberglass free mattress prior to ordering it, it will make the whole process that much smoother and safer for you and your family.

We are doing the leg work so you don’t have to. We have studied, tested, researched, and reached out to dozens of mattress companies to build this list, which we update yearly. Mattresses on this list have been vetted fiberglass free mattresses by our team and you will notice that all are Made in the USA – giving companies total control over the quality of the products going into their mattresses.

Many of those companies care deeply about the health of their customers and our planet. By purchasing any of those mattresses, you are investing in your health, as well as the well-being of our Earth. Thank you!

This list is longer than most of our Best Mattress list, but since so few mattresses are fiberglass free, I want to bring as many as possible to your attention.

Without further ado, here is this year’s list of Best Fiberglass Free Mattress. Please note that this article is informational and consists, in no way, of medical advice. Personal preferences vary and we cannot ensure that any of the mattresses listed below will result in more sleep for you or your family. Mattresses in this list will however be some of the safest and healthiest mattresses, and are based on my personal opinion and knowledge of the mattress industry. I would personally sleep on any of those mattresses.

NaturalForm is definitely hitting the top of the budget range. However, if you are able to afford it, it is an incredible mattress with undeniable value.

NaturalForm is a mattress company that started in the medical mattress world, producing mattresses for hospitals, that were comfortable and excellent at relieving pressure while aligning spines for a healthy night of sleep. Helix is one of the few “regular”, non-premium, non-luxury, mattress brands on the list. They actually sell several of their queen-size mattresses right around the $1,000. They also have a premium version of most of their mattresses, if you are looking for an upgrade. Note that a low price (think $300, $400 mattresses) almost always indicate a mattress made overseas, where hazardous materials are not controlled the way they are in the U.S. It is nearly always an indication of fiberglass usage in a mattress – even when you see the CertiPUR-US certification, since it only applies to foams and not mattress covers.

Being able to score a mattress around $1,000 that is fiberglass free, is amazing, and we love that Helix is going the extra mile in protecting the health of its sleepers. The Helix Midnight is the company’s most popular mattress. A medium firmness hybrid construction of foams and steel coils, it is a great option for side and back sleepers.

Fiberglass-Free Company Statement: “Fiberglass had traditionally been used to provide fire retardancy in mattresses but can be dangerous if exposed. At Helix, we do not use fiberglass in any mattress model.”

Bear Mattress is another regular mattress company going the extra mile. You should be able to score this Bear Elite Hybrid mattress for under $1,500 depending on the on-going sale. We recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress to those with back pain. Its zoned coil system is providing the exact support each area of your body needs, helping to align your spine in the healthiest position, to get rid of back and joint pain. Brentwood Home is a lesser-known mattress company, worth knowing! With one kids mattress and several adult mattresses on its lineup, it is actually a part of Avocado Green Brands (see #1 fiberglass free mattress on this list), and has been selling mattresses since 2009. It comes with a long list of certifications and memberships, included the small and difficult to enter, non-toxic certification, SAFE MADE. Only 6 mattress manufacturers have made the list so far, including Avocado. Both brands are also the first home and bedding brands to achieve the UL Environment Landfill Waste Diversion Validation, on their way to Zero Waste, having proved 90% (working on 95%) diversion through methods other than waste to energy.

Of course, Brentwood Home is using no fiberglass in any of their mattresses. Instead, the company uses a thick layer of GOTS Organic Certified wool from India. One unique feature of the Brentwood Home Oceano is its double layer of individually-wrapped steel coils, with a thinner layer of microcoils providing quick response, and a thicker layer of pocketed coils for support and edge-to-edge sleep.

$500 OFF mattresses with coupon code (click to reveal). The mattress specifically designed for bigger figures! Show Less

Big Fig (= Bigger Figure) is a mattress designed specifically with the needs of heavier sleepers in mind. They had one shot at their mattress and they decided to build it free of fiberglass. We love them for that!

The Big Fig mattress is designed to support up to 1,100 lbs of body weight (500 lbs per sleeper max.). In order to provide ultimate support, it is built with up to 1,600 individually-pocketed coils (in King, 1,200 in Queen). But because everyone deserves a soft and cozy night of sleep, the Big Fig mattress is built with 4 layers of foam (including a latex layer for easiness to toss and turn). It provides a medium-firm feeling, which most heavier sleepers will really enjoy. For those sleeping hot, Big Fig infused its mattress cover and latex layer with cooling gel, preventing you from sleeping hot!

So what acts as fire retardant in the Big Fig? A layer of natural fibers, made of linseed, cotton, and flax.

Fiberglass-Free Company Statement: “Like all mattresses sold in the U.S., the Big Fig meets the federal standards for open flame flammability. The barrier we use is a layer of natural fibers, including linseed, cotton and flax, stitched underneath the top quilted layer of the mattress. We never use any spray-on treatments or potentially harmful chemicals as a fire barrier on our mattress.”

Here is a newcomer this year, with a launch date of May 1st 2023. While the SweetNight Prime Mattress is brand new, SweetNight has been around for years, manufacturing mattresses and bedding accessories since 2011. They ship to 130 countries and have served over 100 millions sleepers!

The SweetNight Prime Mattress is their latest model and unlike other mattresses on this list, it is a fiberglass free mattress made in Asia. Because they source their labor and materials globally, you are able to secure a queen-size Prime for under $1,000, making this mattress a good fit to smaller budgets too.

The SweetNight Prime Mattress is probably the most innovative mattress we have seen in a while. Using a curved cut to solid blocks on foams of different densities and properties, SweetNight has manufactured a 4-in-1 mattress – in other words, the Prime mattress comes with 4 different firmness levels!!

From Soft (5/10) to Medium-Soft (6/10), simply rotate your mattress 180 degrees. Your body will lay in a different mix of softer foams, giving side sleepers (and lower-weight back sleepers) two comfort levels based on their preference. Flip your mattress and rotate it between a Medium-Firm (7/10) and Firm (8/10) feel, perfect for back and stomach sleepers.

Here is the second brand in this list, belonging to Naturepedic – Lullaby Earth. Let’s not forget our smallest, and most at-risk citizens – our precious newborns and babies. With rapidly developing lungs, please make sure to do all of the research before purchasing a crib mattress. As baby starts standing up in his/her crib, it is likely that s/he will jump and let him/herself fall on the mattress, increasing the risk of breaking any fiberglass layer built into the mattress. Do not take the risk… skip the fiberglass crib mattresses altogether, and choose one from this list (Avocado, Naturepedic, and Saatva offer crib mattresses, while Helix, PlushBeds, Bear, Brentwood Home, and Nolah have a kid mattress).

Our favorite one, however, is from Lullaby Earth. The company designs crib mattresses exclusively, with the mission to make them accessible to all! With several models available, all are 100% non-toxic certified. Just as Naturepedic and Happsy, Lullaby Earth has received the highest certification in the USA – MADE SAFE. By laying your baby on a Lullaby Earth mattress, you are give him/her the healthiest sleep money can buy.

The waterproofing and core of the mattress are so clean that they meet FDA food contact standards.

We love the Lullaby Earth Healthy Support Waterproof Crib Mattress for its waterproof ability, making cleaning middle-of-the-night messes a lot easier on the parents. You can also add the flippable option for $40, for a mattress that will grow with your child’s needs in firmness over his/her first few years of life.

We also like the firmness of this crib mattress, with reinforced edges to ensure legs and arms stay inside the bed and never get stuck, while being able to sustain toddlers’ jumps right on the edge of their mattress.

Fiberglass-Free Company Statement: “Unlike competing products in a similar price range, Lullaby Earth crib mattresses are completely free of polyurethane foam (including soybean foam blends), vinyl/PVC, PFC and antibacterial treated fabrics, as well as questionable fire retardants and known allergens.”

Best Fiberglass Free Mattress 2024 - Recap

I hope you found this guide helpful. We covered many brands to give you a wide range of options when it comes to the best fiberglass free mattresses. We would personally bring any of those mattresses inside our home, and while this list is long, it is in no way exhaustive. Those are the fiberglass free mattresses that we think will be enjoyed by most sleepers. They are spread along a wide range of prices and we focused on companies who truly care about their impact on our planet.

Remember that fiberglass can lead to serious healthy conditions and symptoms when airborne. Once flying around your room, it is invisible and will be really hard to remove from surfaces, carpet, rugs, clothing, etc. Many times, disposing of the items will be the only way to truly get rid of loose fiberglass.

By purchasing a fiberglass-free mattress, and spending a little more on your investment, you may be saving time and health concerns in the long run. Also note that the mattresses on this list, are built with care and with high-quality materials that makes them more durable than cheaper options made in China, Taiwan, and Indonesia. You may spend more today, but in the long run, things might equal up as you may not need to replace your mattress for 10, 15, or more years.

I recently read a mom of a 4-year old say that she had spent $400 on a Z**** mattress on Amazon… and it had cost her over $20,000 in medical bills for her child. She is now involved in a class-action lawsuit… This is your cue to invest in a quality, fiberglass free mattress today!

How Can I Tell If My Mattress Contains Fiberglass?

It can be really hard to find information online. Mattress companies are not legally required to disclose all of the ingredients used to manufacture their mattresses and we have yet to see a manufacturer be forth-coming and disclose the use of fiberglass as fire retardant.

Even if the CertiPUR-US certification is publicly showcased, know that it only tests the foam layers for harsh chemicals, not the mattress covers…

The best way to know if your mattress contains fiberglass is to do lots of research prior to purchasing a new mattress. If you cannot find the information on their website, contact the mattress company and ask them the questions.

Lastly, upon receiving your new mattress, check the labels, as they need to fully disclose the ingredients used to make the mattress. Be aware that some companies may use other terms such as glass fibers, glass wool, silica, etc.

If you have mistakenly purchased a mattress with fiberglass, make sure to initiate its return during the company’s at-home trial period. Note that you may need to pay a restocking fee.

What Are The Health Risks Associated With Fiberglass In Mattresses?

Fiberglass poses health risks when it becomes airborne. This happens after the mattress cover has broken due to wear and tear, cleaning cycles, jumping on beds, etc.

Once the fiberglass layer started disintegrated, it easily becomes airborne if the mattress cover becomes loose or unzipped. Fiberglass fragments are small enough to enter mouth, nose, and lungs.

According to this study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, exposure to fiberglass “correlate[s] with recurrent chest infections and pulmonary fibrosis. Once airborne, the fibers of different sizes will be small enough to enter mouth, nose, and lungs, potentially irritating or damaging the lungs, and cause other harms such as vomiting, ashtma-like symptoms, or irritation of the skin and eyes.

Unfortunately, the group most at risk is the babies and young children group, as they are known to jump on their beds, leading to more rapid wear and tear.

Are There Any Affordable Fiberglass-Free Mattress Options Available?

The most affordable fiberglass-free mattress that we know of, on the market today, is the Bear Original mattress. The Queen-size is currently selling for about $650. You can consider any fiberglass-free mattress around the $1,000 mark to be an affordable option.

Note that fiberglass free mattresses are typically made in the USA. They create jobs and are made in a market with high costs of living. It is impossible for a U.S.-made mattress to compete with Asian-made mattresses. Any mattress around $1,000, that is made in the USA with organic materials, leaves little profit margin for the mattress companies.

What Are The Benefits Of Choosing A Fiberglass-Free Mattress?

The first, and most obvious, benefit of choosing a fiberglass-free mattress is health! Airborne fiberglass cannot be seen and gets everywhere in your home, making it really hard to clean. It unfortunately hides all the way inside your lungs as well. By sleeping on a fiberglass-free mattress, you are eliminating the risk of infection altogether.

There are less obvious benefits of choosing a fiberglass-free mattress. Nearly all fiberglass-free mattresses are made in the USA. Your purchase helps create and sustain local jobs and industries.

Because they are made in the USA, those mattress companies have a very good idea and understanding of all of the materials going inside such mattresses. It is often difficult for mattress companies with overseas supply chains and manufacturing to know exactly what goes into their mattresses.. By buying U.S.-made mattresses, you can be confident in the product you purchase. Most of them, as this list shows, are also made of nearly-exclusively organic and natural materials. Another great benefits of choosing a fiberglass-free mattress.

Can I Retrofit My Current Mattress To Be Fiberglass-Free?

Unfortunately not. The first step in the process would be removing the mattress cover. Even for mattresses with a removable mattress cover, this would expose the fiberglass and automatically send it flying in the smallest corners of your home, entering your body and lungs nearly immediately. Even if there was a safe way to remove your mattress cover, fiberglass fibers are very small and it would be virtually impossible to remove them from your mattress cover. It is also often a thin layer stitched into your mattress cover, making it impossible to retrofit your current mattress to be fiberglass-free.

Why Buy A Mattress Online?

I hear you. I am telling you that this is one of the most important purchases you will be making in the next 5 to 10 years, yet I am encouraging you to buy from a website, with no chance to see, feel, or lay on the mattress. I promise you it’s worth it, though! Feel free to read over our Guide To Buying An Online Mattress, but let’s also look at the benefits of buying a mattress online vs. in store:

More Options

When walking inside a mattress store, you are limited to the brands and models carried by the store. Not only are they limited, but the store needs to survive and higher margin products will probably take the store-front, which doesn’t always work in favor of the buyer. However, when shopping online, you will find dozens of online mattress brands.

Now of course, more options means that you need to educate yourself a little more, to understand which mattress brands will be worth your money, and this is where I come in. I test hundreds of mattresses for you each year, and when you read the reviews of an independent mattress reviewer such as Non-Biased Reviews, you get unbiased mattress reviews. Many mattress review websites are now owned by large mattress companies, so make sure you use the services of independent mattress reviewers!

Less Sale Pressure

Buying a mattress can feel as stressful as buying a car these days. You walk into the mattress store and get overwhelmed with sale tactics, straight out of the car lot! Online, you get the benefit of time and peace. Once you have narrowed your choices down to a brand or mattress style, take your time to read the details and do deeper research on the brand sites and right here. See all of the brands we have reviewed so far. Any questions, feel free to email me directly at laura@nonbiasedreviews.com and I’ll be happy to brainstorm ideas with you!

Cheaper Mattresses

By purchasing a mattress online, you are cutting the middle man. You do direct business with the mattress brands and they save on labor, rent, and other overhead costs. It is a win-win and you put the savings in your pocket! You also have many more options, and while you can buy extremely luxurious and expensive mattresses online, you also have access to a large number of cheaper options!

Longer Sleep Test

This one might seem counterintuitive. I bet that your first resistance to buying a mattress online is linked to the lack of testing. You can’t see nor touch the mattress for yourself and you’re not sure whether you can truly believe the edited photos you see online.

Think about it for a second. You walk into a mattress store, lay on a mattress, shoes on, fully clothed, with an adult salesperson staring at you, while trying to keep your kids from taking the store for a trampoline arena. You’ve awkwardly laid on that mattress a total of 50 seconds before making a long-term decision…

When purchasing your mattress online, it nearly always comes with a 100 to 365-night trial. You get to sleep full nights on your investment for several weeks before deciding whether it is adapted to your sleeping needs and preferences. I recommend sleep testing your mattress for at least 30 nights before making your final decision, to give your body a chance to adjust to the new sleeping surface.

Still unhappy, most online mattress companies will arrange for your mattress to be picked up from your home and donated, and your money will be refunded. There is generally no restocking fee and most of the time, your return shipping is free as well. If you buy a Purple mattress at MattressFirm, for example, your return will be subject to MattressFirm’s return policy and restocking fees. Buy directly from Purple and your return is free!

Hassle-Free Hauling

When you buy a mattress online, it ships directly to your home, most of the time for free! Nearly all mattresses ship in a box, making them easy to transport to the room of your choice.

Forget about renting a truck or trying to tie a king-size mattress to the roof of your car, then asking a friend to come help you to get it inside. Instead, a regular carrier drops off a manageable box by your front door, you set the vacuumed mattress on your bed, rip the plastic wrap, and watch it expand in seconds!

Fiberglass-Free Mattress FAQ

How can I tell if my mattress contains fiberglass?

Remove all bed sheets and mattress protector and check the labels attached to either end of your mattress. They should include a full list of all materials used in your mattress.

Are all memory foam mattresses fiberglass-free?

Unfortunately, because memory foam is so highly flammable, memory foam mattresses are most likely to have fiberglass quilted into its mattress cover. Fiberglass is often used in mattresses as a fire barrier to meet Flammability Standards.

Can fiberglass cause skin irritation or other health problems?

Yes, fiberglass can cause skin and eye irritation, recurrent chest infections and pulmonary fibrosis, lung damage and irritation, and other harms such as vomiting, or ashtma-like symptoms.

Are organic mattresses always fiberglass-free?

While not all of them are fiberglass-free, there is a high chance that an organic mattress is fiberglass-free.
