ARE ADJUSTABLE BEDS WORTH IT?

Pros and Cons of Adjustable Beds

Adjustable beds have grown in popularity due to their ability to enhance comfort and promote better sleep. But are adjustable beds worth it for everyone?

In this article, we explore what adjustable beds are, their key features, benefits, and potential drawbacks. Our personal opinion, after 10 years of sleeping on an adjustable split bed, is that there is no going back. It is a piece of luxury that makes traveling outside of our home, honestly difficult.

But let’s take a look at several pros and cons of adjustable beds, some medical research, and give you the information you need to decide if an adjustable bed is the right choice for your sleep needs.

What Are Adjustable Beds?

Adjustable beds are specially designed bed frames that allow users to adjust the angle of the head, feet, or both. Some fancier adjustable beds even offer massage options, USB ports, LED-lighting, and more. Using a remote control or a mobile app, these beds can be positioned to offer a range of sleeping and lounging options.

Key Features of Adjustable Beds

  1. Customizable Sleeping Positions: Users can elevate their head, feet, or both to find their optimal sleeping position.
  2. Massage Functions: Many models include built-in massagers for added relaxation, usually in the form of chest-height, or whole-body, vibrations.
  3. Zero-Gravity Mode: This setting elevates the body to mimic the feeling of weightlessness, which can relieve pressure on joints and improve circulation.
  4. Split Design Options: Couples can adjust each side of the bed independently for personalized comfort.
  5. USB Ports and Under-Bed Lighting: Some models feature modern conveniences, including USB ports for device charging and under-bed lights for nighttime visibility.

Benefits of Adjustable Beds

If you are considering an adjustable bed, understanding its advantages is essential. Here’s how these beds can improve your sleep and overall quality of life.

1. Enhanced Comfort and Support

Adjustable beds allow for customizable sleeping positions, reducing discomfort caused by pressure points. They can also improve spinal alignment, which is crucial for back pain sufferers.

2. Alleviation of Health Issues

  • Improved Circulation: Elevating the legs can reduce swelling and promote blood flow.
  • Reduced Acid Reflux: Sleeping with the head slightly elevated can prevent acid reflux and heartburn.
  • Snoring Relief: Adjusting the head angle may reduce snoring by keeping airways open. This study mentions a 7% reduction in snoring and 5% increase in time spent in deep sleep, at a 12-degree bed-head angle!
  • Back Pain Management: Adjustable beds can relieve lower back pain by supporting the natural curve of the spine.
  • Sleep Apnea Improvement: An adjustable bed can be a very efficient way to improve sleep apnea. This study shows that a 7.5-degree rise in bed head decreased sleep apnea by 31.8% in patient with mild to moderate OSA, reduced hypopneas by 47.3%, and supine-dependent respiratory events by an astonishing 44.9%. Sleep efficiency also increased.

3. Lifestyle Convenience

Modern adjustable beds are not just for sleeping—they are also ideal for activities like reading, watching TV, or working on a laptop, especially if you enjoy the zero-gravity position.

4. Better Sleep for Couples

Split models (i.e., split king, etc.) allow partners to customize their sleeping positions without disrupting each other, making them a great solution for couples with differing sleep preferences. In a split adjustable bed, each partner can control his/her side of the bed independently. Of course, this set up requires 2 individual mattresses (i.e., a Split King is made up of 2 Twin XL mattresses).

5. Fits Inside Most Bed Frames

An adjustable bed base is typically made of plate, on which your mattress lays, with arms that move the head and foot of the bed up or down. The base and feet of the adjustable base are usually a little narrower than your mattress, allowing you to fit the adjustable bed inside your existing bed frame. So if you love your bedroom design, you should be able to remove the slates of your current frame, and simply slide in the adjustable base inside of it, for a seamless design.

Disadvantages of Adjustable Beds

While adjustable beds offer many benefits, they also come with some drawbacks that should be considered.

1. Higher Cost

Adjustable beds are typically more expensive than standard bed frames. Premium features like massage functions or split designs can further increase the price.

2. Maintenance and Repairs

With their motorized components and electronics, adjustable beds may require more maintenance than traditional frames. Repairs can also be costly. We have been using the same base since 2016, and never had a single issue with it, and it should be noted that reputable companies have long warranties on their adjustable bed frames today.

3. Heavier and Bulky Design

Adjustable beds are heavier and more difficult to move, making them less practical for frequent relocations.

4. Compatibility Issues

Not all mattresses are compatible with adjustable beds. Older innerspring mattresses may not work with your new adjustable base, and water beds should never be installed on an adjustable bed either. However, most modern mattresses today, are compatible with adjustable bases. We like using all-foam mattresses on an adjustable base best, especially if it comes with a massage function. However, if your heart is set on a hybrid mattress, note that it will work just fine.

5. Noise Concerns

The motors used for adjusting the bed can make noise, which may disrupt sleep for light sleepers or partners.

Are Adjustable Beds Worth It?

The answer to whether adjustable beds are worth it depends on your individual needs, lifestyle, and budget. Our personal opinion, if you purchase a high-quality, long-lasting, adjustable bed, is YES, without a doubt. But as with all other bedding purchases, each sleeper has different needs and expectations, so here are our thoughts:

Who Benefits Most from Adjustable Beds?

  1. Health-Conscious Individuals: Those dealing with health issues like back pain, acid reflux, allergies, stuffed nose, snoring, or sleep apnea can benefit significantly from adjustable beds.
  2. Couples: Split models offer personalized comfort for partners with different sleep preferences.
  3. Lifestyle Users: If you spend a lot of time in bed for activities like reading or working, an adjustable bed can enhance your experience.

When Might Adjustable Beds Not Be Worth It?

  1. Budget Constraints: If cost is a concern, the high price of adjustable beds may not justify their benefits.
  2. Minimal Sleep Issues: If you sleep comfortably on a traditional bed, you might not see enough added value in switching to an adjustable bed.
  3. Frequent Movers: The bulky nature of adjustable beds can make them inconvenient for those who relocate often.

Tips for Choosing an Adjustable Bed

If you are considering an adjustable bed, keep these tips in mind:

  1. Check Compatibility: Ensure your mattress works with adjustable frames. Memory foam and latex mattresses are usually compatible, as are most modern hybrid mattresses. Our mattress reviews always mention whether the mattress can be fitted on an adjustable bed or not.
  2. Evaluate Features: Decide which features, like massage functions or USB ports, are most important to you.
  3. Consider Split Models: Couples with different sleep needs may benefit from split adjustable beds. We personally think they’re the greatest luxury we can add to our bedroom!
  4. Read Reviews: Look for reviews from real users to gauge performance and durability.
  5. Test It Out: Use your at-home trial to try out your new adjustable bed and make sure it feels most comfortable.

Adjustable beds offer numerous benefits, from improved comfort to health advantages, making them a worthwhile investment for many people. However, they may not be suitable for everyone due to their higher cost.

Ultimately, deciding whether an adjustable bed is worth it comes down to your specific needs and lifestyle. If you struggle with health issues, desire enhanced comfort, or share a bed with a partner who has different preferences, an adjustable bed can be a game-changer. On the other hand, those with a tight budget or no pressing sleep concerns may find a traditional bed sufficient.
