Best Mattress for Big and Tall

Finding the Best Mattress For a Big and Tall Person

Rana you are small! What if I’m big, or tall, or have the body of a football player?

This is an issue that I have spent a good deal of time considering. But, how could I possibly answer this question without help? So, I enlisted the help of a friend of mine who is THREE TIMES my size. At 6’8″ and 350 lbs. he defines the BIG & TALL category. I have set aside several mattresses that I thought could hold up to his weight, and he spent some time testing them. Then, I had our top three mattresses for big and tall people sent to his house, so he could sleep test them.  Are you excited to see the results?

What do these mattresses have in common?

Each one of them has individually wrapped coils to provide the user with additional support.  They are also thick, ranging from the Sapira’s 13″ to the DreamCloud’s 15″.  Thick mattresses are a must when shopping for something that fits heavy people.  They all are priced at under $2,000 for King and California King sizes.

Let’s talk a bit about Clinton’s experience.  If you think it’s tough to find the right bed for you, imagine being in the top 99.99% of height in the US.  That would mean that a California King would be your only choice.  In the video below you can see how much of a Cal King he occupies.

Last summer he and I were discussing various beds which have failed him over the years and they usually had a couple of things in common.  They were generally between 10″-12″ thick and he found that he would sink too far into them.  If they had coils or inner-springs in them he could feel them.  So for the last year whenever I tested a hybrid mattress that was over 12″ thick I set it aside so that he could test it as well.

This site is all about sleep testing though, not just punching or throwing some bowling balls on a mattress.  So, he and I narrowed down the list of mattresses that he liked and we asked the mattress companies to ship him California King sized mattresses so that he could do serious sleep testing on them.  California kings take up so much space that in the end he had to pick one, and he chose the DreamCloud.

DreamCloud just launched an adjustable frame and it works well with the DreamCloud mattress.  Unfortunately, they don’t have it in TALL size.  So the split king or regular king size are the only options for larger people.

Bed Size

  • Twin: A twin will measure 39″X 75″. Your basic set up for children and a spare bedroom with limited space
  • Full: 54″ X 75″, which is a good size for teenagers as long as you don’t expect them to grow to six feet tall.
  • Queen: 60″ X 80″. It fits two adults, but you had really better like each other as you will be very close.
  • King: 76″ X 80″. This gives two adults more space, but has the same amount of leg room (height) as a queen.
  • California King: 72″ X 84″. This will give plenty of room to two adults and allow people in the 6’6″ range (like Clinton above) the ability to sleep on a bed without dangling their feet off the end.

    Our Rating Criteria

We use 10 categories to rate the mattresses we sleep test. Each category is scored 1-10. Unlike other reviewers we aren’t scared to give a mattress a low score if it is deserved. If I spend 2 weeks sleeping on a mattress that consistently gives me back pain, you will read about it on my review!

    Packaging/Shipping:

First Impressions count right? Some of the mattresses come in boxes, and some come in over sized bags. I prefer boxes as they are much easier to move around. Some boxes have cute logos and some have really fun quotes, and yes I really made a video called box vs. box vs. box in a box. Try saying it fast three times in a row. Did you get tongue tied?

    Smell

On the subject of first impressions, some of the mattresses will have a bit of an odor when they are unboxed. Most people use the term off-gassing to describe it. Some of the mattresses take a few days for the smell to go away and sometimes it is barely noticeable.

    Comfort

When you lay on a mattress and it’s not comfortable that’s surely something that we should point out right? If I’m having trouble sleeping on a bed, I’ll tell you that. If I can’t sleep on a mattress I will scream to high heaven that you need to steer clear of a mattress if you have a similar sleep profile as I do (petite side sleeper). Remember, just because it doesn’t work for me doesn’t mean that it won’t work for you.

This is a key category to focus on when you are going through my various reviews. The more mattress that I sleep test the larger my comparison database gets. If you ask me about 2 mattresses that I have tested, I can instantly tell you which one was more comfortable to me.

    Support

I have had a ton of mattresses which fail to give me the proper support. There is nothing worse than falling into a deep depression that you have to climb out of. Sometimes you can even get multiple sinking parts and huge mountains in between, clearly not ideal for restful sleep. I test for support with:

    • weights
    • sitting on the edges and corners
    • jumping/standing/walking on the mattress

If I fall all the way through the mattress to the ground, it won’t score very high. Conversely, if I hardly notice any sinking in the mattress it will get a high score.

Recently we added adjustable base tests to our review process. How do different mattresses stand up to the test?

Have you ever walked into a mattress retailer? Of course, you have! Did you notice that almost every mattress is now on an adjustable base? This is the wave of the future, I know that I will never sleep on a bed frame that isn’t adjustable. Sure, I’ll test different frames and foundations, but my go to sleep set will always be adjustable. It’s hard to explain, but once you try one you won’t go back. I even credit my adjustable frame with curing my husband’s snoring with just a click of the anti-snore button on my remote.  Here is what is great, DreamCloud sells an adjustable base that is currently at an unbeatable price.

    Company

With the hundreds of new brands that have popped up over the last few years it is difficult to sort through them. I’m putting in the leg work to figure out which companies are connected to each other. In doing so I can help determine the expected longevity of each of these mattress companies. If I don’t think a mattress company is going to make it in the long term, then I won’t expect their warranty to hold up. A company my promote a forever warranty, but if it closes down in six months you surely won’t be able to get your bed replaced.

    • I use Fakespot to see if companies are planting fake reviews. You will be amazed by some of the results some of these online retailers get on fakespot.
    • I research other review sites to see which ones are owned by mattress companies. For example; Sleepopolis, mattress clarity and slubersearch are all connected to Casper.
    • Community outreach by the company: I love companies that give back to their communities. If your company is holding an event for the community in the Phoenix area let me know and I’ll cover it.
    • Customer support: If a company has poor communication or support, you will read about it here or hear about it on my video reviews.
    • Warranty: the companies in our top categories all score highly in the warranty field. If we don’t think a company will be around to honor their warranty they won’t be included on our list.

    Motion Transfer

When I’m standing on a bed and a wine glass doesn’t move when I walk near it, it will score high on this test. A high number is great for when you have a partner who is tossing and turning and not disturbing you. On our scale from 1-10, one is a waterbed, 10 is; wait what? There is someone in the same bed as me!

    Sleep Quality

If I’m not able to sleep on a mattress, then it’s possible that you may have the same issues. This is really the most important category that a buyer should be focused on. It is nice when a bed is well constructed or made by a reputable company. However, if you can’t sleep on it, you are going to find yourself shopping for a new bed sooner than planned.

    Stays Cool

I live in Scottsdale; Arizona and I’ll tell you a little secret about the weather here… It gets hot in the summer. Having a breathable mattress is a must here. There aren’t a ton of things worse than having extra heat rising up from your mattress making your back or side sweat. I’m a huge fan of talalay latex, gel infusions, and alternative construction (like Leesa’s Avena foam).

    Materials/Durability

Surely what’s inside the mattress matters right? I also pay close attention to the covers. Size matters; the Casper Essential is 8.5″ while the DreamCloud is a full 15“. Almost double the thickness of the mattress, but is it double the price as well (no)?

    Value

You really have to look at the prices of the mattress vs. the competition. Not just the direct to consumer, bed in a box model, but the in-store values as well. The bed in a box model offers consumers huge cost savings vs. buying from the store. This is because the middle man is cut out and the companies don’t have to pay electricity and rent.

We give each category a score from 1-10 with 10 being the highest. I am using a 10 point must system. The mattress that preformed the best in a category gets a 10 and all other mattresses are judged against that standard.

    Mattress Firmness Scale

We also assess the overall firmness of a mattress from 1-10 with 10 being almost rock hard firm. Since different people have different preferences on the firm level that works best for them, that number doesn’t go into the total ratings. Here is our Firmness scale as of 10/4/17

    Mattress firmness scale 2018
Recently, we noticed that just about every mattress you see in the store is staged on an adjustable frame. These giant retailers must be on to something right? So, we decided that every mattress we test should also go through a few cycles of adjustments with our adjustable bed. I’m really excited to use the DreamCloud Adjustable bed with their mattress.  I had tried it on a few other adjustable beds and it just never looked quite right.  Well, now it works like a charm, the best part their adjustable frame is the best value on the market.  A queen size goes for $750 and includes 2 massagers.  Feel free to shop around and try to find a better deal on an adjustable frame, I’ll be here waiting.  Or you could just take my word for it and check out the DreamCloud Adjustable frame review on my site.

If you haven’t been on an adjustable frame you are really missing out, so we feel that it is crucial to our review process to add this wrinkle. We understand that everyone doesn’t have an adjustable bed, but if you are considering one with your next mattress purchase we feel you should be prepared. If a mattress is too thick or sturdy, it likely won’t perform well on an adjustable base. If it has interlocked coils, forget about it.

Why Buy a Mattress Online?

  • It will ship directly to you, most of the time for free
  • Do you really enjoy having a mattress salesman follow you around and check you out as you try out all of the mattresses? The answer is NO
  • Wouldn’t you rather take some time to test a mattress rather than just be lead around by the salesman to the highest commission bed he sells? Most online retailers offer a trial period of 100 days or more to test out your new mattress.
  • Same quality mattress for a fraction of the cost.
  • You have more time to comparison shop from your home.

Finding the Best Mattress That Ship to Canada

I’m not Canadian, but I speak French so I’ll occasionally shoot some of my videos in French.  I have also had the pleasure of visiting Goose Bay Canada while on Air France 66 (an Engine blew up)

Unlike many of the review sites out there, I sleep test every mattress that I review for about 2 weeks. This means that I can only get to 20-25 mattresses per year, so I am pretty selective about the ones that I choose to test.  The logistics of testing mattresses from Canada are a bit more complex than the US mattresses that I typically test.  Therefore, I am willing to bet that there are quite a few mattresses made in Canada that I haven’t had the chance to test yet.  That said, if you are a Canadian firm and want me to test your product please shoot me an email.

We have compiled a list of the best mattresses that ship to Canada.  The prices listed are before discounts on a queen size mattress.

Two of the beds that sell in Canada go head to head in Purple’s human egg drop test:

Of these mattresses the Douglas and Novosbed are the only ones made in Canada, the rest will face shipping issues and currency fluctuations.

On 4/11/18 the Canadian dollar is worth 0.8 USD.  What does this mean to you?  Should I take that into account when I give you my rankings?  Of course!  Let’s discuss.

The original Purple ships to Canada at $1,399 Canadian vs. $999 US.  This is a bit more than $100 USD that it would be if you were on the other side of the border, so you can think of it this way.  Would I pay an extra $100 USD to ship a Purple up to Canada?  I would say yes, but it would make my decision more difficult.  Purple states on their FAQ that it costs extra to ship from their factory in Utah to Hawaii, Alaska and Canada.  However, there is no “separate fee”, instead it is calculated at check-out.

The Leesa mattress is priced at $1,290 Candadian, which is equivalent to about $1,025 USD.  So there isn’t much of a bump up to get it shipped to Canada, around $30 USD.

The Casper at CD $1,175 is actually a discount to the US price at the current exchange rate.  In addition, Casper just changed their secret sauce and added a zoned comfort approach.  That combined with their pricing make them a very attractive option for Canadian shoppers.

Brooklyn Bedding, Nest Bedding and Layla all come from a factory in Phoenix.  They all state that they ship to Canada for an additional fee, but their websites do not provide details.  Therefore, you will see that I have listed the prices in US dollars in the chart above.

I’m still sleep testing the Douglas, but so far it may be one of the best choices for people in Canada.  Firstly, you won’t have to worry about extra shipping fees since it’s made in Canada.  More importantly look at the price in the table above.  It is far less expensive than all of the other options.  I have been pleasantly surprised by my sleep experience on the Douglas.  It has a few features that I haven’t seen in the other mattresses that I have tested.  I’m actually quite sad that I can’t keep mine, it was a sample sent across the border so it needs to be recycled when I complete my testing.  Here are my thoughts on the Douglas.  In the comments below you can let me know how thick my accent is, I promise I’ll survive.  I’m open to constructive criticism to help me improve.

I wasn’t allowed to keep the Douglas here in the States, so I put it through a lot of different experiments before I sent it off to be recycled.

The Tomorrow Sleep All Foam Mattress

The Tomorrow Sleep All Foam Mattress

Tomorrow Sleep added a new mattress to their line up!

When I was informed that what’s inside that plain cardboard box is a Tomorrow Sleep all foam mattress, I honestly was all excited! I haven’t test it yet, I haven’t slept on it or felt it but I thought if it’s the same quality as the Tomorrow Sleep Hybrid mattress, then we are off for a good start- or a good night’s sleep- Plus it is always a honor and pleasure to be chosen to try a new product coming from a high end company such as Tomorrow Sleep.

It doesn’t matter your background sometimes or how excellent your first mattress or product was, What matters right now is THE RESULTS!

Is the new Tomorrow Sleep All Foam Mattress going to deliver me what I am looking for such as:

  1. An uninterrupted good night’s sleep
  2. No sinking feel like the one you get from a traditional all foam mattress
  3. No sweating while sleeping
  4. Comfort, support and no motion transfer
  5. Neck and spine alignment
  6. And good body/ weight distribution

Keep scrolling because the results are in!

Menu:

What is Inside the Mattress?

The Tomorrow Sleep Foam Mattress is a solid 10″ of comfort layers. A total of 3 layers make this Inside of it you will find:

1” 2.5 lb/cubic foot Tomorrow Cool Swirl Memory Foam designed to regulate body temperature throughout the night. This soft top layer conforms to your body to relieve pressure and enhance comfort.

2” 2.5 lb/cubic foot Tomorrow Airy Comfort Memory Foam. This middle, Airy Comfort Memory Foam layer helps heat dissipate while continuing to cradle individuals while they sleep.

Both top layers contain open cell construction which allows air to pass through, regulating temperature and creating the perfect sleep climate. This construction also all but eliminates motion transfer.

And finally the bottom layer. 7” Tomorrow Dynamic Support Foam. This layer is denser and firmer for all night support. It provides the structure of the mattress to ensure sleepers don’t sink too deeply into the mattress.

All layers are CertiPur certified, latex-free and high quality viscoelastic made from polyurethane.

Sleep Test Results

The Tomorrow Sleep Hybrid mattress has always been on the list of my faves. So I am expecting a similar, if not the same performance from the Tomorrow Sleep Foam Mattress (minus the coils of course).

I’ve been sleeping on the new Tomorrow Sleep All Foam mattress for over two weeks now. I have to be honest I sometimes hesitate thinking am I going to get that same great support and comfort I get with a Hybrid mattress? Or am I going to sink into it, get sweaty and get someone to give me a hand to help me out of that foam.

But chokingly that was not the case with the new Tomorrow Sleep all Foam mattress. And the answers to all my doubts, or questions have been answered through this amazing mattress.

The results were outstanding, and yes I was:

Able to sleep through the night without interruption.

I did not get hot through the night, or sweaty, and was sleeping cool.

Motion transfer was at its minimal. I was even surprised myself how perfect was that balance between comfort, support and that right amount of sinkage that didn’t make me feel like the foams are swallowing me sinking my body into the mattress. NOT AT ALL .

So no, I did not need anyone’s hand to help me out of the bed, it was as easy as diving into it.

PROS
• It’s the kind of mattress you are looking forward to sleep on after a long day at work, or travels. Which is a good sign.

Conforms well on an adjustable bed.

Sleeps cool thanks to open cell construction which allows air to pass through keeping the heat away.

Affordable
CONS
• The cover might leave its pattern/ marks on your back, Which is funny. (Don’t worry it will go away). Also make sure you have your fitted sheet on and don’t sleep straight on the cover like I did.

There’s a slight smell the is not off-gassing but simply the smell of new fresh foam. You won’t even notice it unless you stick your nose into the mattress.

The only maybe Con that counts is that it is not going to support your hips if you are a stomach sleeper. But they always have their Hybrid mattress!

Who Should Buy the Mattress?

While I recommend looking into the Tomorrow Sleep Hybrid mattress if you are a stomach sleeper, trying to keep those hips from sinking. Keep in mind people come in many different body shapes and sizes which is why I need to specify here: if you are a stomach sleeper that is on the heavy side, look into the Tomorrow Sleep Hybrid mattress. But I know I am safe to say the Tomorrow Sleep all foam mattress is absolutely a great mattress if you are:

A side sleeper

A side/ Back combo sleeper

A Back sleeper.

Also if you are looking into investing in a brand name such as The Tomorrow Sleep without dreading the cost, this one is for you.

Most memory foam mattresses in the market with similar construction and characteristics retail for around $1,500. By shipping direct to consumers and not going through a middleman, Tomorrow Sleep was able to significantly reduce costs. As an added benefit, free shipping is offered on every mattress along with 365 night trial. And lastly, where available, white glove delivery and old mattress removal is also offered.

How about putting a mattress on a Sailboat?

We took the challenge, and by the way no one challenged us.  We’ve been thinking about putting a mattress on a boat for awhile.

We as a family, love to take road trips. We drive by RVs and think how fun it would be to have your own moving bedroom. I t must be comfortable since it’s a bed and you don’t have to leave it.  How easy it must be nowadays, to order a bed in a box to ditch the old RV mattress and get a brand new shiny one that would last long.

One thought led to another and finally it clicked!  How do you get a mattress on a boat?  And how do you get rid of the old one?  How big should it be, do you have to get a special “boat mattress?”

Luckily, I had access to a sail boat since my MIL close friend owns one.  I talked to her about my idea on how intrigued I am now to find out if I can get a bed in a box on that boat and she immediately approved.  She told me how much she hated the flimsy mattress she sleeps on when she is sailing and how sleeping on it is sometimes impossible.  Perfect!  That’s my cue right there.  I went online after inquiring about that mattress size and bought her one.  Did you catch that part, the part where I said that I bought her one?  I could get just about any direct to consumer mattress company to give me a mattress for free.  However, I chose to buy her a Nectar.  I will tell you later on why I was so lucky I chose Nectar.  Better yet, watch my movie on YouTube, trust me it’s worth it.

I will give you a hint as to why I chose to buy a Nectar, it does not come in a box…

Nectar Mattress tube on a boat

Nectar mattresses are compressed and rolled, rather than compressed and folded.

I ordered it, but then I was so worried.  Flash back to the first time I ordered a Nectar mattress in 2017, it took FOREVER to arrive.  During the wait I forgot I have ordered it.  I honestly freaked out when I saw a big, long tube shaped wrapped item by my door I thought it was a dead body (I  know, too much Sons Of Anarchy).  At first I thought wow, why ship in a tube all compressed and rolled up?  Why not just compress and then fold it and ship it in a box?

If that Nectar doesn’t make it on time I am screwed.  I can only do it during Spring Break that’s the only time when I am free and available to travel to CA.  Surprisingly, Nectar took care of that issue, the proof: The mattress was by my MIL’s doorstep in 4 business days!  Kuddos Nectar, you saved the day (Spring break vacation/ work in this case) and now I am super ready and excited for this.

So how did we do, did it fit?

Oh, and in case you were still wondering why Nectar? Easy, I really got lucky here. Unlike other mattresses on the market nowadays, Nectar comes wrapped in a tube shaped container not in a box (the only other mattress that comes wrapped I can think of is The Purple Mattress).  Also the way it’s wrapped and compressed, not folded compressed helped me a lot inside that small room.  Do you see the part of the boat that my hat is touching?

Imagine that I had found a way to get a wider mattress through the door (hint I couldn’t have) when a typical bed in a box is unfolded it wouldn’t make it under that part of the boat.  I would have been stuck with an L shaped mattress, which would have meant that it would be time to breakout the saw to get it out of the room.  So Nectar had 3 key advantages over other choices:

  1. Affordable price
  2. Ships in a tube shape (taller and skinnier than a typical bed in a box shape)
  3. Rolled up not folded

End results, WE DID IT.  We installed an 11″ thick queen sized mattress in a place where it certainly shouldn’t fit.  Of course, this means that it isn’t coming out without being chopped in half, but that’s a problem for another day, hopefully 10 years or more from now.

Yes We Can! I put a mattress on a boat.

I hope you enjoy this movie as much as I enjoyed setting up a Queen Size Mattress on a Sail Boat.

I also would love to hear your thoughts!  Do you think we could have gotten another similar quality mattress into that tight space?  I’m pretty sure that a typical bed in a box wouldn’t have made it through the door.  I heavily considered a Purple mattress, but they are SOOO heavy, so I opted not to buy one.

Notice how skinny the door and stairs are, I don’t think a bed in a box would have made it through.

Purple Mattress vs. New Purple Mattress

Purple Mattress vs. New Purple Mattress

Purple is one the top 5 best selling direct to consumer (Bed in a Box) Mattress Retailers

Recently they have made some dramatic changes to capitalize on their position in the market.  They are now publicly traded under the stock ticker PRPL, currently trading a bit under $11 per share.  They added 3 hybrid purple mattresses, the 2, 3 and 4.  Each number is connected to the size of the hyper elastic polymer layer’s thickness.  Meaning that the New Purple 2, has a 2 inch polymer layer, while the 4 has a 4″ layer.

I have personally purchased the Purple Mattress (original), the Purple Pillow and the Purple Seat cushion.

If you are lucky and close to one of the Mattress firm locations that carry purple you can try one out in store before you buy it.  Currently, mattress firm is selling the original Purple and the Purple .2.  Why don’t they carry the Purple.3 & .4?  I’m guessing price has something to do with it.  I was recently at one of the Phoenix Mattress firm stores and I saw that they had the Purple .2 and .3.  I asked the salesman why they didn’t have the purple .4, and he said that they didn’t have the market for such an expensive version.  He added, that he could still sell it to me, but that I couldn’t try it in store.

Purple and purple .2 are for sale on the mattress firm website

Open up the accordion below to see what I think about the Purple products I have sleep tested.

The Original Purple Mattress

It takes a bit of getting accustomed to this mattress.  You feel a bit like you are on a waterbed.  That said, I’m a side sleeper and I love the Purple Mattress!  I did a 2 week sleep test on it and then put it into storage.  I didn’t think about it for months, and then I bought an adjustable bed.  I took all of the mattresses that I had in storage and cycled them onto my new base.  At first I was like, “nah I’ll skip the purple”.  Why?  Because it is SOOOO Heavy, moving it around is a real chore.  It was probably my last pick to come out of storage.  I remembered liking it, but I wasn’t in love with it.

Best Mattress Purple mattress layers

Fast forward a bit, I’m loving life on my adjustable bed, and some of the mattresses that I really liked didn’t work well on an adjustable base.  Around the same time I was at a mattress store and I noticed that nearly every mattress on display was on an adjustable base.  My adjustable base completely changed the way that I sleep and cured my husband’s sleeping.  Simply put, it was a life altering adjustment to convert to an adjustable frame.  This is going to be the future in the mattress industry, if a mattress doesn’t work on an adjustable base the future sales of that mattress will be in jeopardy.

After testing about a dozen mattresses on the adjustable base it was time for the purple mattress.  No matter how strong you are, nobody can move a queen sized one on their own.  It is both heavy and it can “taco” on you if you aren’t careful.  With all of the talk about mattress powder in the polymer section, the real issue you have to look out for pulling some muscles or finding yourself underneath the mattress while moving it.  It may come off in jest, but seriously have someone help you move this mattress.

Here is how it tested.

The video should start at about the 8:19 mark, if not skip forward.  Did you notice that the purple mattress was the best performing (and also preforming) mattress in this test?  Well I did!  I put that video together in November 2017, and have tested several mattresses since then.  Purple is still in a class by itself.  Did it sound like I was picking on the purple by saying it was heavy and hard to move?  Guess what?  That is a huge benefit on an adjustable base (assuming you don’t exceed the lift capacity of the base).  The extra weight that is tucked into the mattress allows it to conform to the different positions of the base.  Did I also mention that the Purple mattress is weak on motion transfer tests, and that it feels like a waterbed?  Those are generally assumed to be bad things right?  Not so fast my friends.  When you turn on the massage feature on your adjustable base (hint the purple powerbase has a massage feature) this waterbed like quality transfers all of the massage power throughout the entire mattress.  With most mattresses that I test the massage is generally focused within about 8″ of the massage unit.  Put simply, it is a magical combination and I highly encourage you to consider a purple mattress if you have an adjustable base.  If you don’t have an adjustable base, it is time to look into it.

If you go with the purple mattress plus powerbase combo you will get the one stop shopping experience.  However, my understanding is that the purple powerbase is manufactured by another company and Purple slaps their label on it, along with a markup of course.  So, you may want to consider less expensive adjustable base options.

New hybrid Purple 2, 3 and 4

They added 7.5″ coils and gave consumers the choice of how large of a hyper-elastic polymer section that they desire.  They say that the Purple .4 is ideal for side sleepers.  Look at the price table below, I’ll wait for you!  OUCH! They want me to fork over $2,799 to upgrade to a queen sized Purple .4…

How much of this do you want to sleep on?

So they already have a huge strike here on the price point.  Just wild speculation here, but I am willing to bet that this was a wall street decision, not a marketing decision.  The new management that took over when Purple went public, probably said to the board something along these lines.  “Folks, we are losing way too much money each and every quarter, and these losses are accelerating as we grow.  Therefore, I think we should jack up prices and release a new product that is so different from what everyone else is doing that it will be noncompetitive.  Let’s not stop there, let’s go out on a mission to make the Purple .2-.4 like a status symbol.  We can create some kind of competition, only the coolest people have the .4.  It will be like what driving a Mercedes meant in the 80s.  Who’s with me?”  It’s actually crazy enough that it just may work.  Purple does an amazing job of advertising if any company could pull of this bold plan it’s going to be Purple.

New Purple Mattress 2-4 inch layer choice

You don’t have to go all the way up to the Purple .4 you could get the polymer section down to a 3″ or 2″ section.  Here is the CRAZY part the 4″ polymer section costs a full $1,200 more than the 2″ polymer section.  The polymer section is what the Purple is all about, so I do get why they would double down on it to provide the option to get all the way to 4″.  I wonder if they have considered additional thickness on their original mattress as well?

Besides the choice that you now have for the polymer section, the new purple mattress now has individually wrapped 7.5″ coils.  This will provide sleepers with the additional support that some fell that the original purple may not provide.  I feel like the “Raw Egg Test” video had a section about how coils weren’t good, so I went and watched the video.  How much egg is on my face?  I was wrong there is no mention of coils being bad in that video.  Meaning, this expansion into the hybrid world may have been planned for the last couple of years.

The choice between which version of the new Purple you choose comes down to your choice of how much you are willing to spend.  The 2″ polymer layer with the transition foam and 7.5″ coils is $1,599, which is priced in the middle of hybrid coil foam mattresses.  However, this isn’t really foam is it?  I mean you do get the egg catching capabilities of the Purple polymer layer.  The big question is; are you willing to almost double your cost to double up on their polymer layer?  The 4″ .4 is priced at the luxury end of the market of the direct to consumer market.  Generally, you can double the price of a direct product to get the price that you would pay in store, meaning that they think highly of their flagship .4.  They are a really bold company and certainly know how to market, so as much as I’m unsure of the price, they must have launched it for a reason.

The Base: Foam vs Responsive Support Coils (RSC)

The biggest difference between the original and the new mattresses, aside from the depth of Purple, is the base upon which the Smart Comfort Grid™ is set.

The original is set on two high-quality layers of polyurethane foam and the New Purple Mattress is set on individually-encased Responsive Support Coils.

Original Purple® Mattress | Foam

  • Slightly Firmer Feel – for those who prefer a more firm sleep surface.
  • Less Bounce with ideal motion isolation – foam is naturally less springy and a tad more motion-isolating than coils are, so you’ll feel your partner move less in the night.
  • Smart Comfort Grid™ – adds a medium-firm support layer beneath the Purple® grid.

New Purple® Mattress | RSC

  • More Immersive – the coils are designed to compress under specific pressure points, so you sink into the mattress for more immersive comfort.
  • Bouncier with near-perfect motion isolation – individually wrapped coils make the bed more responsive to motion, without sending movement across the entire mattress.
  • More Edge Support – both the coils and the auxiliary foam border provide excellent edge support all the way around the mattress.
  • Better adapted to all body types – The responsiveness of coils, paired with the Smart Comfort Grid™, adapts more readily to all body types and sleep positions.
  • Smart Comfort Grid™ – Designed to complement the Purple® grid for perfect pressure relief and support.

Purple .4$2,499$2,799$3,499$3,499

Which mattress would I pick?

The price difference between the original purple and the new hybrid models is so drastic that I would personally purchase an adjustable bed and a purple mattress before I even considered purchasing a 2, 3, or 4.  They advise that the 4 is ideal for side sleepers like me, but no, sorry I’ll stick with my adjustable base and my original purple.  I think their ideal target market for a .4 purple is going to be a large side sleeper, and I don’t fit that demographic.

Imagine that I were to purchase the Purple .4, the one they suggest for side sleepers like me.  At the queen size I would be forking over $2,799 on just the mattress, I still need to put it somewhere right?  I know that you can buy a great quality queen adjustable base for around $1,000, add the original Purple price of $999.  Now I’m sleeping on a killer bed for $2,000.  That doesn’t even cover just the mattress at the Purple .4 level.  So, in my world, I have a way better combination for great sleep and I have an extra $799 in my pocket.

To me the choice is pretty clear, stick with the original Purple.  If you have extra money to spend I HIGHLY encourage you to add in an adjustable base.  However, were I in the big and tall category, I could possibly be swayed into a Purple .2 as it is marketed for back sleepers.  One of the cons that I hear about the original Purple is that it doesn’t offer enough support for people in the big category.  The new Purple .2 may be able to solve that problem with the additional 7.5″ of responsive support coils.  I have an extremely large friend that I may be able to convince to test out the Purple .2.  So I know that there is NO way I’m buying a Purple .4, but I may buy the .2 for a big and tall test…

If you want me to write a check and test the Purple .2 so that we can see if it is a fit for the big and tall crowd, please leave a comment below.  With enough comments I may be swayed to pull the trigger on it.

Brooklyn Bedding Factory

Brooklyn Bedding Factory

Brooklyn Bedding Factory in Phoenix, Arizona

Brooklyn Bedding has a wide variety of products that are made in the USA out of their Phoenix Factory.  I have had the amazing experience of touring the Brooklyn Bedding Factory to see where the magic happens.  Check out these photos.[wpsm_column size=”one-half”]

[/wpsm_column]

When they designed the factory a couple of years ago they put their corporate offices upstairs and you can see the entire factory floor from this angle.  It’s quite a sight. You can also see that if you stack their boxes just right you get a really cool design.

So, why did I take all of the time to show you that Brooklyn Bedding manufactures their mattresses here in the USA?  Well it’s the Economics of this that I wanted to highlight.  Brooklyn Bedding sells online, direct to you.  They have the ability to deliver a superior product at a lower price point by making and selling direct to the consumers.  They do not have to pay rent, utilities, maintenance, and employee costs at the retail level.  In addition, they don’t need to pay sales commissions or middleman markups, or fees to another company to make their mattresses for them.  Here is the twist:

Brooklyn Bedding also has a retail model

There are 18 Brooklyn Bedding showrooms in Arizona and 2 in Utah.

visit to the brooklyn bedding store in scottsdale

Pictured above is their North Scottsdale location.  At first glance having these show rooms introduces additional overhead to their organization.  It is likely more profitable to skip the retail locations and send their products directly to you.  There have to be advantages to having their own stores though, right?

  • Increased product exposure
  • Extra chances to market their brand
  • Increases their sales volume by reaching a more broad consumer base
  • Reduces other competitors in the local market (would you set up a mattress shop next door to theirs, knowing they could beat you on price?)

Let’s cover the economics of a factory

I pulled up some publicly available data (it’s from Pratt’s stats, so you have to pay for it) on mattress factories that have sold in the last 20 years and found one that I decided to look into.  It was for Simmons Canada, Inc. back in 2005.  It was probably just done for tax purposes to bring the Serta Simmons bedding company together, as it lists Simmons Co out of Atlanta as the buyer.  Nonetheless, it is the financial data that I wanted to look at.  That year they had sales of $108 million (Canadian dollars I assume).  Their COGS (cost of goods sold) took up about 74% of that.  Operating expenses took up another 15%, so they were left with an EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) of 10.5%.  The key percentages that we can work with here are 26% gross profit, and 10.5% EBIT.

For fun let’s assume that Brooklyn Bedding runs similar ratios, and that this is only for the factory operations.

Economics of mattress retail operations

I also found data on Mattress Firm’s acquisition of The Sleep Train, inc., around 2013.  Now this one is more fun to look at, as this is what you see when you walk in the store (well behind the scenes).  Sleep Train had revenue of $459 Million in 2013, and COGS of about 50% of that.

So that we are all on the same page, let me take you through an example.  Assume sleep train purchased a mattress wholesale from one of the factories in Atlanta, Tupelo, or Phoenix (3 of the largest mattress factories in the USA) for $100.  They would then mark it up to $200 (or double the price) when sold.  This would give them a profit of $200 and a COGS of $100.  In reality, they would likely mark up the mattress to $3-4- maybe $500, and then offer a variety of sales discounts and “free” items while shooting for that 2 times markup, so that they eventually arrived at a 50% gross profit margin.

Sorry for the detour; Sleep Train was earning a gross profit margin of 50%, what about their overhead?  I’ll start with ouch.   46% went to cover overhead, all of the salespeople want to get paid, the landlord wants to get paid, the utility companies want to get paid.  All that was left over for Sleep Train was  4.36% of EBIT.  If you add back in depreciation and amortization you get an EBITDA of 5.65%.

What happens when you combine factory ownership and a retail store?

There are a lot of variables that I can’t control for, hopefully the data that I have is for a factory only operation (Simmons Canada) and a retail only operation (Sleep Train).  If other operations run in a similar way, I would rather be the owner of a factory than the owner of several retail locations.

Brooklyn Bedding takes the next step and gets the best of both worlds, except there is a MAJOR difference.  For a second, set aside the fact that their retail operations shouldn’t be able to compete with their online only operations.  Do you see a potential difference between the business model that Brooklyn Bedding can utilize that Sleep Train couldn’t?  Go back up to the sleep train section that is in italics, and think about middlemen markups.  Brooklyn Bedding has one less middleman to feed, which means that they don’t have to make the same 2 times markup at all of the stages of the business to earn the same profit margins of a factory plus a retail operation.

Theoretically, Brooklyn Bedding’s online division should be their highest margin business, followed by their retail operations.  Of course, since they own the entire process they just have to figure out which pocket the profits should go into.  Now, if they put all the profit in the left pocket and leave the right pocket empty, does it matter?  No, it’s the same pair of pants right?

The whole point of this exercise is that Brooklyn Bedding is in control of their destiny from start to finish, which means that they can deliver the products that resonate with their consumers at an affordable price.  In turn, they are able to keep their margins in line with their peers, while cutting out an extra layer of middlemen (or 2 layers with the direct online sales platform).  The end result is that they can produce a better product at a better price than many of their peers.  Clearly a win for the consumers, and as an added bonus by having all of their operations in the USA they are able to employ hundreds of hard working Americans.

New addition to the Brooklyn Bedding Factory

On my tour to the factory last year, I was told that they were in the process of getting a pocketed coil machine.  They didn’t have it at the time, so I asked if I could borrow their footage.  Also, the quality of their production is WAY better than what I would have put together:

Once they brought in the technology to build their own coils they decided to make a few changes to their mattress lineup.  The signature product, the #bestmattressever now has 6″ pocket coils.  To compensate for turning that into a hybrid mattress, they added an all foam mattress called the Bowery.  In December, they added a luxury hybrid to the mix, known as the Aurora.  I have tried all of these in the store or in my home, and I am going to do a sleep test of the Bowery soon.  In case this is the first time to my site, I sleep test each mattress that I review for 2 weeks so it takes me some time before I complete my reviews.  Here is a photo of the Aurora sitting on the Brooklyn Signature on my adjustable frame.

The founders of Brooklyn Bedding, John and Rob Merwin, just put together an amazing video about their journey from a direct to you business model to the mattress empire that they have built.  It is a remarkable story about how having an idea and the courage to just start can lead to amazing success.  It is the path that every entrepreneur sets out on, but only a select few are able to accomplish.  I encourage you to go check it out, it’s an inspirational story that I think ever budding entrepreneur needs to see.

My Brooklyn Bedding Reviews

Someone in their marketing department needs to get a raise for being the first one to claim the hashtags:

While I was on the tour I got to test the pillow that fits the hashtag.  It’s an aerated Talalay latex pillow and at $40 it’s an absolute steal.  So not only did they get a perfect hashtag, but they put it on an amazing pillow.  My mother in law liked it so much that it ended up in her suitcase the last time she visited.  Fortunately for me, I have another one.
