Can I clean the cover of the BedInABox Original mattress?

BedInABox Original Mattress - Composition

One of the most important factors when choosing a mattress is its construction, as it influence comfort, durability, and overall performance. The BedInABox Original mattress is a two-layer, 11-inch thick, memory foam mattress designed to contour to the body, promote spinal alignment, and relieve pressure points.

Two-Layer Design + Mattress Cover

  1. Mattress Cover: The cover is made of a knit fabric, which is soft and breathable. It is designed to be moisture-wicking, which helps with temperature regulation. The BedInABox Original mattress cover is not removable, so any cleaning will need to be done directly on the mattress surface.
  2. 3″ of CoolRest® memory foam: The top layer consists of 3 inches of high-density foam, designed to provide body-contouring support, which cradles the sleeper’s body and helps alleviate pressure on sensitive areas like the shoulders, hips, and lower back. The open-cell structure of the foam promotes airflow, and its gel infusion design helps to draw away excess body heat and to keep sleepers cool throughout the night.

  3. 8″ of high-density support foam: Beneath the comfort layer lies a thick layer of high-density foam. This foundational layer proves deep support and ensures the mattress retains its shape over time. It is also responsible for offering durability and preventing sagging, which is a common issue in lower-quality memory foam mattresses.

BedInABox Original Mattress Sleep Tests

Everything we felt in one box

Firmness Temperature Maintenance Sleeping Style Bed Base
We have rated the BedInABox Original mattress a 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale, making it a medium-firm mattress. It combines 3 inches of cooling pressure relief with 8 inches of a firm high-density foam for support.
Thanks to its open-cell, gel-infused, comfort layer memory foam, and its breathable mattress cover, the BedInABox Original mattress performs quite well for an all-foam mattress. If you are a very hot sleepers however, its cooling capabilities might be under-performing, and a hybrid construction may be a better bet.
The best way to keep your BedInABox Original clean is to use a mattress protector, and as needed, to spot-clean it with clean water and a mild detergent. Simply blot the stain (do not rub) until the stain disappears.
The BedInABox Original mattress is very versatile. We recommend it for most side-sleepers under 230 lbs, stomach-sleepers under 200 lbs, and back sleepers under 230 lbs.
The BedInABox Original mattress fits on all bases (foundation, slats, box springs, platform) and adjustable bases.

Firmness

Firmness plays a crucial role in how comfortable a mattress will be for different types of sleepers. The BedInABox Original mattress falls into the medium-firm category, ranking about a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This medium-firm feel makes it a versatile option that can accommodate a wide range of sleepers, but it may feel softer or firmer depending on your weight and sleep position.

Who Will Like the Firmness?

  • Side Sleepers: The mattress offers 3 inches of pure pressure relief for side sleepers, especially those who weigh less than 230 pounds. The memory foam contours to the shape of the body, alleviating pressure on the shoulders and hips, before finding support in the higher-density foam below.

  • Back Sleepers: Back sleepers will appreciate the combination of contouring and support. The medium-firm feel helps promote spinal alignment while still offering enough softness to avoid discomfort.

  • Stomach Sleepers: This mattress can work for lightweight stomach sleepers, but those who weigh more than 200 pounds may find it lacks some firmness to prevent the hips from sinking too much, which could lead to back pain.

One of the common complaints about memory foam mattresses is that they tend to trap heat, leading to uncomfortable nights, especially for hot sleepers. However, the BedInABox Original mattress uses CoolRest® memory foam, which is engineered with an open-cell structure and infused with cooling gel to improve breathability and dissipate heat.

Cooling Features

  • Open-Cell Memory Foam: The open-cell design (thousands of little holes) promotes airflow, allowing heat to escape rather than being trapped in the mattress. This makes it more breathable than traditional memory foam.

  • Cooling-Gel Memory Foam: The top foam is infused with cooling gel, which does a really good job at drawing excessive heat away from the body, and remaining nice and cool for the sleeper.
  • Moisture-Wicking Cover: The knit cover helps to wick away moisture, ensuring that the sleeper stays cool and dry throughout the night.

Temperature Performance

Overall, the BedInABox Original does a decent job of temperature regulation for a memory foam mattress. However, if you are an exceptionally hot sleeper, you might still experience some warmth during the night, especially compared to hybrid mattresses that offer better airflow.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer refers to how well a mattress isolates movement, which is important for couples who share a bed. The BedInABox Original Mattress performs exceptionally well in this category due to its memory foam construction.

How It Performs

Memory foam is known for absorbing motion, and the BedInABox Original is no exception. Whether your partner tosses and turns or gets out of bed in the middle of the night, you’re unlikely to feel much disturbance. This makes it an excellent choice for couples, especially if one person is a light sleeper.

Maintenance & Durability

Like all mattresses, the BedInABox Original requires some basic maintenance to ensure it stays in good shape over the years. Although it has a durable design, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Mattress Care Tips

  1. Rotate Regularly: To prevent uneven wear, it’s a good idea to rotate the mattress 180 degrees every 3 to 6 months. This helps to distribute body weight more evenly and extends the lifespan of the mattress.

  2. Use a Waterproof Mattress Protector: Since the cover is not removable, spills and stains can be difficult to clean. A high-quality mattress protector is highly recommended to prevent accidents from damaging the foam, and to protect your investment.

  3. Spot Cleaning: If you do have a spill, you can clean the surface of the mattress with a mild detergent, fresh water, and a clean cloth. Only blot the stain, do not rub it as it could spread the stain further. Be sure not to soak the foam, as excessive moisture can lead to mold or mildew issues and make sure it is fully dry before putting your sheets back on.

Durability

The high-density support foam and quality construction make the BedInABox Original a durable mattress that is designed to last. Most users report that the mattress holds up well over time, with minimal sagging even after years of use. Additionally, it comes with a 20-year warranty, which gives buyers peace of mind regarding long-term performance.

Who Is The BedInABox Original Mattress Good For?

This mattress is a versatile option that works well for a variety of sleepers, but it is particularly suited for certain groups.

Best for:

  • Couples: The excellent motion isolation and medium-firm feel make this a great choice for couples, especially if one partner moves around a lot at night. It, however, lacks response for great sex.

  • Side Sleepers: The pressure-relieving qualities of the memory foam are ideal for side sleepers, offering good support and comfort for the hips and shoulders. We recommend the BedInABox Original mattress for side-sleepers until 230 lbs.

  • Back Sleepers: The balance between comfort and support makes this mattress well-suited for back sleepers, especially those weighing less than 230 pounds. Heavier back sleepers may need a slightly firmer mattress to receive the support they need.

  • Stomach Sleepers: Lighter-weight stomach sleepers who enjoy a little plushness and contouring, will enjoy the BedInABox Original mattress. We recommend it for stomach-sleepers under 200 lbs. Beyond that, stomach sleepers should seek a firmer mattress (firmness around 8/10) to ensure their hips are supported at an horizontal level with the rest of their back.

Not ideal for:

  • Heavy Stomach Sleepers: Those who weigh more than 200 pounds may find the mattress too soft, as it may not provide enough support to keep the hips aligned with the spine.

  • Hot Sleepers: While the mattress has decent cooling features, it may not be enough for people who tend to sleep very hot at night. A hybrid or innerspring mattress may be a better option for these individuals.
