Bear Natural Mattress - Composition

The Bear Natural Mattress is meticulously crafted from natural materials, with five distinct layers, each contributing to its overall comfort and support.

Quilted Cover with Organic Cotton

The topmost layer, and closest to the body, is the quilted mattress cover, made of organic cotton. This material is not only eco-friendly but also offers a breathable feel with a subtle stretch and soft touch across the mattress surface. This design aims to provide a restorative and rejuvenating night’s sleep, helping the body regulate its own temperature.

We found its stretch to prevent the cover from pulling when a partner moves, helping reduce motion transfer of the Bear Natural Mattress.

Natural Latex Comfort Layer

Beneath the cover lies the first layer of foam: a 100% natural, sustainably sourced, non-toxic latex layer. This latex layer delivers unique cushioning with a medium-firm feel, helping to relax muscles and relieve tension, effectively lifting away the pressures of the day while you sleep.

We found it to be the perfect balance between pressure relief and the start of support. Its bounce is perfect for those who toss and turn at night, as we never felt stuck in the foam, helping stay asleep through movement.

Responsive Comfort Layer

This comfort layer adapts to all body types and sleep positions, reducing motion transfer while also offering additional airflow and pressure relief. Its design ensures that the mattress remains responsive, catering to various sleeping preferences.

We found this layer to provide a nice transition between the pressure-relieving latex layer above and the firmer coils. It provides full-body support, including of the high-pressure areas, and allows for a healthy sleeping position.

Individually Encased Zoned Coils

The support core consists of individually encased coils that provide well-distributed support. Higher-gauged coils are strategically placed in the center to enhance lumbar support. This design delivers superior pressure relief, motion isolation, and breathability for a first-class sleeping experience.

Additionally, extra strong edge coils enhance edge support along the mattress perimeter, ensuring robust support even when lying close to the sides. This firmer perimeter allows for side-to-side sleeping, giving the impression of a sleeping surface about 20% wider. It is also a big plus for folks who transition in and out of bed by sitting on the side of the bed, as we found it robust enough to not sag.

Shock Absorbing Base Layer

At the foundation, the high-density DuraDense foam base layer provides support and durability to the entire mattress, ensuring longevity and consistent performance over time.

Bear Natural Mattress Sleep Tests

Everything we felt in one box

Firmness Temperature Maintenance Sleeping Style Bed Base
We rated the Bear Natural Mattress a medium-firm feel (7/10), offering a balance of support and comfort for various sleepers. Its natural latex adds slight bounce for easy movement, while the zoned coil system provides targeted lumbar support. Overall, we found it to offer the right balance between pressure relief and support, with mild contouring.
The Bear Natural Mattress regulates temperature with a breathable organic cotton cover, open-cell natural latex, and airflow-promoting individually encased coils. These layers work together to prevent heat buildup and ensure a cool, comfortable sleep environment we found temperature-neutral and enjoyable.
Always protect your mattress with a waterproof mattress protector. In case of a spill, blot fresh stains with a clean cloth, fresh water, and a mild detergent. Do not rub stains to avoid spreading them, and ensure the mattress is dry prior to covering it with sheets again.
We recommend the Bear Natural Mattress to all back sleepers, as well as stomach sleepers under 180 lbs or those with a preference for plusher mattresses. Heavier stomach sleepers and those with back pain, will prefer a firmer mattress. While some side sleepers may enjoy a firmer mattress, most will find the Bear Natural a little too firm and lacking pressure relief.
As with most modern mattresses, the Bear Natural mattress can be placed on any bed frame – box springs, divan bases, traditional frames, slats, adjustable bases, and even the floor will do!

We have rated the Bear Natural Mattress a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making it a medium-firm mattress, just a tad bit firmer than average.

This level of firmness is designed to offer a good balance between support and comfort, catering to a wide range of sleepers. The natural latex comfort layer provides a slight bounce, adding support and making it easy to turn around, while the zoned coil system ensures targeted support, especially in the lumbar region.

We recommend the Bear Natural mattress to all back sleepers, as well as stomach sleepers until 180 lbs. Back sleepers will find it easy to rest in a well-aligned spinal position, while stomach sleepers under 180 will enjoy the mild contouring and increased support.

Stomach sleepers over 180 lbs may be looking for a firmer mattress of around 8/10, unless you have a personal preference for slight softer mattresses. Side sleepers may find that the Bear Natural Mattress is a little too firm and lacking of pressure relief for their needs, possibly crushing their shoulder and hip areas overnight.

Temperature Regulation

Temperature control is a significant consideration for many sleepers, and the Bear Natural Mattress addresses this through several layers:

  • Breathable Organic Cotton Cover: The Bear Natural mattress cover is breathable thanks to its organic cotton construction. It allows air to circulate, preventing heat buildup on the mattress surface and helping the body to regulate its temperature.

  • Natural Latex Layer: Latex is known for its temperature-neutral properties, ensuring it doesn’t retain heat like some synthetic foams. It is open-cell, designed with thousands of little holes, which allow for air to flow through, further enhancing the breathability of the Bear Natural Mattress.

  • Airflow Through Coil Layer: The individually encased coils promote airflow within the mattress, aiding in heat dissipation. Air heated by the body finds its way out, while cooler room air is allowed to enter the mattress, cooling down the foam layers.

These combined features work together to maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature throughout the night.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer refers to the movement felt on one side of the bed when the other side is in motion, usually from a partner or child turning and tossing. The Bear Natural Mattress performs moderately in this aspect:

  • Natural Latex Layer: While latex provides a responsive and bouncy feel, it can transfer more motion compared to memory foam. However, the stretchy organic cotton mattress cover helps to balance out from of the motion transferred by the latex layer.

  • Comfort Foam Layer: underneath the natural latex layer is a layer of foam, which absorbs most of the motion, helping to reduce transfer from one partner to the other.
  • Individually Encased Coils: These coils help to isolate motion to some extent, as they move independently, reducing the spread of vibrations.

Overall, while there is some motion transfer, we did not find it significant enough to disturb most sleepers. However, individuals who are highly sensitive to movement may notice it more.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance can extend the lifespan of your Bear Natural Mattress:

  • Rotating the Mattress: Feel free to rotate your mattress 180 degrees every 3-6 months to ensure even wear. Never flip it, however, as it is built with a specific order of foam layers in mind.

  • Using a Mattress Protector: We always recommend adding a breathable, waterproof mattress protector to your mattress, to safeguard against spills and stains, and protect your mattress investment. Our favorite natural waterproof mattress protector is reviewed here.

  • Cleaning: The organic cotton cover can be spot-cleaned with a cloth, mild detergent, and water. Do not use harsh chemicals and avoid over-saturating the mattress with water. Let it fully dry before adding your sheets back on.

By following these maintenance steps, you can ensure your Bear Natural Mattress remains in optimal condition for years to come.

Who Is The Bear Natural Mattress Good For?

The Bear Natural Mattress is suitable for a variety of sleepers:

  • Back Sleepers: The medium-firm feel provides adequate support to maintain spinal alignment.

  • Stomach Sleepers under 180 lbs: The firmness prevents the hips from sinking too deeply, promoting proper posture. Heavier stomach sleepers, or those with back pain, may consider a slightly firmer mattress.

  • Side Sleepers: While most side sleepers may find it slightly firm, the natural latex offers enough cushioning to alleviate pressure points in heavier sleepers, those suffering from back pain, and those with a personal preference for firm mattresses; though we recommend a softer mattress for most side sleepers.

  • Eco-Conscious Consumers: With its use of organic cotton and natural latex, the Bear Natural Mattress is an excellent choice for those prioritizing sustainable and non-toxic materials.

  • Hot Sleepers: The breathable materials and design promote airflow, making it suitable for individuals who tend to sleep hot.
