PurpleFlex Mattress - Composition

The PurpleFlex mattress is built using a unique combination of materials designed to provide support, pressure relief, and long-lasting durability. At the heart of this mattress is Purple’s proprietary GelFlex® Grid, an elastic polymer material that flexes under pressure points while offering excellent support for the rest of the body. This technology distinguishes PurpleFlex from conventional memory foam and hybrid mattresses, and is usually the reason sleepers choose to invest in a Purple mattress.

Note: If you are looking for an alternative, the only similar mattress we have tested so far is the GhostBed 3D.

Let’s take a look at each layer independently:

  1. Stretchy Mattress Cover: Purple encases its mattresses in a breathable cover that is soft, moisture-wicking, and easy to clean. The fabric ensures proper airflow, which contributes to the cooling properties of the mattress. It is also designed to be very elastic, in order to move with your body as it relieves pressure into the Purple GelFlex Grid underneath.
  2. 2″ Purple GelFlex® Grid: This layer features the proprietary polymer GelFlex Grid, Purple is known for. Its hyper-elastic polymer material is temperature neutral and designed to maintain its structure over time, offering a unique, responsive feel that differs from the sinking sensation of traditional memory foam. As it is designed with more air-letting pockets than actual polymer, it is an excellent layer to promote airflow.
  3. 6″ Base Support Foam: Beneath the GelFlex Grid is a 6-inch layer of high-density foam, which provides firm support and maintains the mattress’s overall structure.

  4. Reinforced Perimeter: Not a layer per-se, the high-density reinforced perimeter is made of firmer foam to make getting in and out of bed easier, as well as provide a wider sleeping surface, allowing sleepers to sleep from edge-to-edge, without the feeling of rolling off the bed.

This unique combination of materials makes the PurpleFlex mattress both durable and responsive. With only 2 inches of real pressure relief, however, it is a firmer mattress, and may not offer enough cushioning to side-sleepers, making the PurpleFlex a great mattress for back- and stomach-sleepers, as well as those suffering from most back pains.

PurpleFlex Mattress Sleep Tests

Everything we felt in one box

Firmness Temperature Maintenance Sleeping Style Bed Base
We have rated the PurpleFlex mattress a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale, making it a medium-firm mattress. It combines 2 inches of pressure-relieving Purple Grid on top of 6″ of high-pressure foam for spinal alignment, and pressure point support.
Thanks to its breathable cover, and the wide-open gel grid, air flows and exchanges with cooler room air all night long, very effectively keeping sleepers sleeping cool.
The best way to keep your PurpleFlex clean is to use a mattress protector, and as needed, to spot-clean it with clean water and a mild detergent. Simply blot the stain (do not rub) until the stain disappears.
With only 2 inches of true pressure relief before hitting firmer, high-density, foam, the PurpleFlex is a great mattress for most back and stomach sleepers. Some heavier stomach-sleepers may need a slightly firmer mattresses, and most side-sleepers over 130 lbs would benefit from a softer mattress.
The PurpleFlex mattress fits on all bases (foundation, slats, box springs, platform) and adjustable bases.

Firmness

The firmness level of the PurpleFlex mattress can be described as medium-firm. We have rated it a 7 / 10, with 10 being the firmest. This level of firmness works well for most back and stomach sleepers who need more support and the feeling of floating on top of the mattress.

The 2 inches of decompression offer the heavier hip and upper-torso areas the cushioning they need to decompress, without losing out on the spine-aligning firmness brought by the high-density foam below.

Responsive Feel

One of the standout features of the PurpleFlex mattress is the responsive feel (or bounce) provided by the GelFlex Grid. Unlike traditional foam mattresses that may feel dense or confining, the PurpleFlex responds quickly to movement, giving it a slightly bouncy quality that allows sleepers to shift positions with ease. This bounce also makes the PurpleFlex a very comfortable mattress for sex.

The grid design also adapts to individual body contours, ensuring support in areas where it is needed most.

For sleepers who prioritize spinal alignment, this mattress provides excellent support, particularly for back sleepers. Stomach sleepers may also benefit from the PurpleFlex, as it prevents the hips from sinking too deeply, a common issue with softer mattresses.

Temperature

Temperature control is a crucial factor for many sleepers, and the PurpleFlex mattress excels in this area. The GelFlex Grid is designed with large built-in air channels, promoting airflow and preventing heat buildup. Unlike memory foam, which tends to trap heat, the open structure of the grid keeps the surface cool throughout the night.

Cooling Technology

The breathable cover also plays a role in regulating temperature. Made from moisture-wicking fabric, it helps dissipate body heat, allowing for a cooler sleep environment. This feature makes the PurpleFlex mattress ideal for hot sleepers or those living in warmer climates.

In comparison to other mattresses, such as traditional memory foam or hybrid options, the PurpleFlex offers superior cooling capabilities. Sleepers who often wake up feeling hot or sweaty will likely appreciate the temperature-neutral properties of this mattress.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer can be a concern for couples, especially if one partner is a restless sleeper. The PurpleFlex mattress minimizes motion transfer thanks to its GelFlex Grid, however, the 6 inches of high-density foam is what truly absorbs the motion in the PurpleFlex.

Ideal for Couples

If you share your bed with a partner or even a pet, the PurpleFlex’s design will help you experience fewer sleep disruptions caused by movement. Unlike innerspring mattresses, which can create a ripple effect, the PurpleFlex mattress absorbs and minimizes motion transfer, allowing both partners to sleep more soundly.

Maintenance & Durability

Maintaining a mattress is often a concern for buyers, but the PurpleFlex mattress is designed to be low-maintenance. The mattress cover is easy to remove and clean, ensuring that you can keep your sleep surface fresh. Regular maintenance involves vacuuming the surface and spot-cleaning any stains that might occur.

Long-Term Durability

Thanks to its durable GelFlex Grid, the PurpleFlex mattress is built to last. The hyper-elastic polymer material used in the grid is resistant to sagging and deformation, meaning the mattress will retain its supportive qualities for many years. While traditional memory foam mattresses can wear out and lose their shape over time, the PurpleFlex’s grid structure remains intact, ensuring a longer lifespan.

Who Is The PurpleFlex Mattress Good For?

The PurpleFlex mattress caters to a wide range of sleepers, but there are certain groups that will benefit most from its unique design.

Back and Stomach Sleepers

Due to its medium-firm feel, the PurpleFlex mattress is particularly well-suited for back and stomach sleepers. The GelFlex Grid provides optimal spinal alignment, ensuring that the lower back and hips are properly supported without causing the body to sink too far into the mattress.

Hot Sleepers

The cooling technology of the PurpleFlex makes it an excellent choice for hot sleepers. The GelFlex Grid’s ability to promote airflow and the breathable cover combine to create a cool sleep environment. Sleepers who tend to overheat at night will benefit from the temperature-neutral properties of this mattress.

Couples

With its ability to minimize motion transfer and excellent performance for sexual activities, the PurpleFlex is a great choice for couples. Even if one partner is a restless sleeper, the grid structure prevents movement from traveling across the bed, ensuring a more restful night’s sleep for both parties.

Side Sleepers

While the PurpleFlex mattress is designed to support a range of sleep positions, side sleepers who weigh more than 130 pounds may find that the medium-firm feel doesn’t provide enough cushioning for their hips and shoulders. However, lighter side sleepers may appreciate the mattress’s ability to relieve pressure in these areas, especially for side-sleepers who have a personal preference for firmer mattresses.

We would have liked to see the PurpleFlex offer more value. Priced around the $1,000 range, we find its construction too simple. Its 6 inches of high-density foam are found in most value mattresses, and its only pressure-relieving layer is 2 inches thick (thin).

If you are in for the Purple feel, you will find that in the PurpleFlex for sure, and it is their cheaper mattress. However, if your budget allows, we would recommend an upgrade to the Purple Mattress, for more benefits, and what feels to us like a better value.
