Purple Mattress vs. New Purple Mattress

Purple Mattress vs. New Purple Mattress

Purple is one the top 5 best selling direct to consumer (Bed in a Box) Mattress Retailers

Recently they have made some dramatic changes to capitalize on their position in the market.  They are now publicly traded under the stock ticker PRPL, currently trading a bit under $11 per share.  They added 3 hybrid purple mattresses, the 2, 3 and 4.  Each number is connected to the size of the hyper elastic polymer layer’s thickness.  Meaning that the New Purple 2, has a 2 inch polymer layer, while the 4 has a 4″ layer.

I have personally purchased the Purple Mattress (original), the Purple Pillow and the Purple Seat cushion.

If you are lucky and close to one of the Mattress firm locations that carry purple you can try one out in store before you buy it.  Currently, mattress firm is selling the original Purple and the Purple .2.  Why don’t they carry the Purple.3 & .4?  I’m guessing price has something to do with it.  I was recently at one of the Phoenix Mattress firm stores and I saw that they had the Purple .2 and .3.  I asked the salesman why they didn’t have the purple .4, and he said that they didn’t have the market for such an expensive version.  He added, that he could still sell it to me, but that I couldn’t try it in store.

Open up the accordion below to see what I think about the Purple products I have sleep tested.

The Original Purple Mattress

It takes a bit of getting accustomed to this mattress.  You feel a bit like you are on a waterbed.  That said, I’m a side sleeper and I love the Purple Mattress!  I did a 2 week sleep test on it and then put it into storage.  I didn’t think about it for months, and then I bought an adjustable bed.  I took all of the mattresses that I had in storage and cycled them onto my new base.  At first I was like, “nah I’ll skip the purple”.  Why?  Because it is SOOOO Heavy, moving it around is a real chore.  It was probably my last pick to come out of storage.  I remembered liking it, but I wasn’t in love with it.

Purple mattress cover

Best Mattress Purple mattress layers

Fast forward a bit, I’m loving life on my adjustable bed, and some of the mattresses that I really liked didn’t work well on an adjustable base.  Around the same time I was at a mattress store and I noticed that nearly every mattress on display was on an adjustable base.  My adjustable base completely changed the way that I sleep and cured my husband’s sleeping.  Simply put, it was a life altering adjustment to convert to an adjustable frame.  This is going to be the future in the mattress industry, if a mattress doesn’t work on an adjustable base the future sales of that mattress will be in jeopardy.

After testing about a dozen mattresses on the adjustable base it was time for the purple mattress.  No matter how strong you are, nobody can move a queen sized one on their own.  It is both heavy and it can “taco” on you if you aren’t careful.  With all of the talk about mattress powder in the polymer section, the real issue you have to look out for pulling some muscles or finding yourself underneath the mattress while moving it.  It may come off in jest, but seriously have someone help you move this mattress.

Here is how it tested.

The video should start at about the 8:19 mark, if not skip forward.  Did you notice that the purple mattress was the best performing (and also preforming) mattress in this test?  Well I did!  I put that video together in November 2017, and have tested several mattresses since then.  Purple is still in a class by itself.  Did it sound like I was picking on the purple by saying it was heavy and hard to move?  Guess what?  That is a huge benefit on an adjustable base (assuming you don’t exceed the lift capacity of the base).  The extra weight that is tucked into the mattress allows it to conform to the different positions of the base.  Did I also mention that the Purple mattress is weak on motion transfer tests, and that it feels like a waterbed?  Those are generally assumed to be bad things right?  Not so fast my friends.  When you turn on the massage feature on your adjustable base (hint the purple powerbase has a massage feature) this waterbed like quality transfers all of the massage power throughout the entire mattress.  With most mattresses that I test the massage is generally focused within about 8″ of the massage unit.  Put simply, it is a magical combination and I highly encourage you to consider a purple mattress if you have an adjustable base.  If you don’t have an adjustable base, it is time to look into it.

If you go with the purple mattress plus powerbase combo you will get the one stop shopping experience.  However, my understanding is that the purple powerbase is manufactured by another company and Purple slaps their label on it, along with a markup of course.  So, you may want to consider less expensive adjustable base options.

New hybrid Purple 2, 3 and 4

They added 7.5″ coils and gave consumers the choice of how large of a hyper-elastic polymer section that they desire.  They say that the Purple .4 is ideal for side sleepers.  Look at the price table below, I’ll wait for you!  OUCH! They want me to fork over $2,799 to upgrade to a queen sized Purple .4…

How much of this do you want to sleep on?

So they already have a huge strike here on the price point.  Just wild speculation here, but I am willing to bet that this was a wall street decision, not a marketing decision.  The new management that took over when Purple went public, probably said to the board something along these lines.  “Folks, we are losing way too much money each and every quarter, and these losses are accelerating as we grow.  Therefore, I think we should jack up prices and release a new product that is so different from what everyone else is doing that it will be noncompetitive.  Let’s not stop there, let’s go out on a mission to make the Purple .2-.4 like a status symbol.  We can create some kind of competition, only the coolest people have the .4.  It will be like what driving a Mercedes meant in the 80s.  Who’s with me?”  It’s actually crazy enough that it just may work.  Purple does an amazing job of advertising if any company could pull of this bold plan it’s going to be Purple.

New Purple Mattress 2-4 inch layer choice

You don’t have to go all the way up to the Purple .4 you could get the polymer section down to a 3″ or 2″ section.  Here is the CRAZY part the 4″ polymer section costs a full $1,200 more than the 2″ polymer section.  The polymer section is what the Purple is all about, so I do get why they would double down on it to provide the option to get all the way to 4″.  I wonder if they have considered additional thickness on their original mattress as well?

Besides the choice that you now have for the polymer section, the new purple mattress now has individually wrapped 7.5″ coils.  This will provide sleepers with the additional support that some fell that the original purple may not provide.  I feel like the “Raw Egg Test” video had a section about how coils weren’t good, so I went and watched the video.  How much egg is on my face?  I was wrong there is no mention of coils being bad in that video.  Meaning, this expansion into the hybrid world may have been planned for the last couple of years.

The choice between which version of the new Purple you choose comes down to your choice of how much you are willing to spend.  The 2″ polymer layer with the transition foam and 7.5″ coils is $1,599, which is priced in the middle of hybrid coil foam mattresses.  However, this isn’t really foam is it?  I mean you do get the egg catching capabilities of the Purple polymer layer.  The big question is; are you willing to almost double your cost to double up on their polymer layer?  The 4″ .4 is priced at the luxury end of the market of the direct to consumer market.  Generally, you can double the price of a direct product to get the price that you would pay in store, meaning that they think highly of their flagship .4.  They are a really bold company and certainly know how to market, so as much as I’m unsure of the price, they must have launched it for a reason.

The Base: Foam vs Responsive Support Coils (RSC)

The biggest difference between the original and the new mattresses, aside from the depth of Purple, is the base upon which the Smart Comfort Grid™ is set.

The original is set on two high-quality layers of polyurethane foam and the New Purple Mattress is set on individually-encased Responsive Support Coils.

Original Purple® Mattress | Foam

  • Slightly Firmer Feel – for those who prefer a more firm sleep surface.
  • Less Bounce with ideal motion isolation – foam is naturally less springy and a tad more motion-isolating than coils are, so you’ll feel your partner move less in the night.
  • Smart Comfort Grid™ – adds a medium-firm support layer beneath the Purple® grid.

New Purple® Mattress | RSC

  • More Immersive – the coils are designed to compress under specific pressure points, so you sink into the mattress for more immersive comfort.
  • Bouncier with near-perfect motion isolation – individually wrapped coils make the bed more responsive to motion, without sending movement across the entire mattress.
  • More Edge Support – both the coils and the auxiliary foam border provide excellent edge support all the way around the mattress.
  • Better adapted to all body types – The responsiveness of coils, paired with the Smart Comfort Grid™, adapts more readily to all body types and sleep positions.
  • Smart Comfort Grid™ – Designed to complement the Purple® grid for perfect pressure relief and support.

Price Table

Type Twin XL Queen King California King
Purple $699 $999 $1,299 $1,299
Purple .2 $1,299 $1,599 $1,899 $1,899
Purple .3 $1,899 $2,199 $2,699 $2,699
Purple .4 $2,499 $2,799 $3,499 $3,499

Which mattress would I pick?

The price difference between the original purple and the new hybrid models is so drastic that I would personally purchase an adjustable bed and a purple mattress before I even considered purchasing a 2, 3, or 4.  They advise that the 4 is ideal for side sleepers like me, but no, sorry I’ll stick with my adjustable base and my original purple.  I think their ideal target market for a .4 purple is going to be a large side sleeper, and I don’t fit that demographic.

Imagine that I were to purchase the Purple .4, the one they suggest for side sleepers like me.  At the queen size I would be forking over $2,799 on just the mattress, I still need to put it somewhere right?  I know that you can buy a great quality queen adjustable base for around $1,000, add the original Purple price of $999.  Now I’m sleeping on a killer bed for $2,000.  That doesn’t even cover just the mattress at the Purple .4 level.  So, in my world, I have a way better combination for great sleep and I have an extra $799 in my pocket.

To me the choice is pretty clear, stick with the original Purple.  If you have extra money to spend I HIGHLY encourage you to add in an adjustable base.  However, were I in the big and tall category, I could possibly be swayed into a Purple .2 as it is marketed for back sleepers.  One of the cons that I hear about the original Purple is that it doesn’t offer enough support for people in the big category.  The new Purple .2 may be able to solve that problem with the additional 7.5″ of responsive support coils.  I have an extremely large friend that I may be able to convince to test out the Purple .2.  So I know that there is NO way I’m buying a Purple .4, but I may buy the .2 for a big and tall test…

If you want me to write a check and test the Purple .2 so that we can see if it is a fit for the big and tall crowd, please leave a comment below.  With enough comments I may be swayed to pull the trigger on it.

The New Purple Hybrid Mattress

The New Purple Hybrid Mattress

The Original Purple Mattress is still for sale, but they have added a new member to their family.

The New Purple mattress has three options, the 2, 3 and 4.  The system is pretty straight forward, at the lower end you can choose the one with a 2″ polymer section (just like the original purple mattress).  Below is a picture of my original Purple’s top polymer layer.

Best Mattress Purple mattress layers

inside the new purple mattress

In the second picture notice how the coils are wrapped in some poly foam on the sides.  This will ensure that you don’t feel the coils from the side.

You can beef up the polymer section to a 3″ or 4″ section.  Here is the CRAZY part the 4″ polymer section costs a full $1,200 more than the 2″ polymer section.  Yes, the queen sized hybrid with a 4″ polymer section is $2,799!

Besides the choice that you now have for the polymer section, the new purple mattress now has individually wrapped 7″ coils.  This will provide sleepers with the additional support that some feel that the original purple may not provide.  This may be the game changer that Purple was seeking.

You can think of the New Purple as a beefier option for larger/heavier sleepers.  I’m a side sleeper and they say that their 4″ polymer section is ideal for side sleepers.  So for my queen size they are suggesting I fork over $2,799 to try this.  At the same time, I’m not heavy so I’m not sure I’m the ideal candidate for the .4.  I am a bit tempted by the thought of floating on an extra 2 inches of the egg catching polymer layer.

As usual, Purple came out with a fantastic Human Egg Drop Test commercial.  What was I going to do just sit back and enjoy it?  Nah, I needed to try it myself.  So I moved my Purple mattress from the spare bedroom to my bedroom.  Then I asked my son if he wanted to have some eggs strapped to him to test out the Purple’s egg catching powers.  He happily agreed, and here are the results.  Thanks to Ray Landreth for being a good sport:

Menu:

What is Inside the Mattress?

This comes down to your choice of how much you are willing to spend.  The 2″ polymer layer with the transition foam and 7″ coils is $1,599, which is on the high side for a hybrid coil foam mattress.  However, this isn’t really foam is it?  I mean you do get the egg catching capabilities of the Purple polymer layer.  The big question is; are you willing to almost double your cost to double up on their polymer layer?

What I really want to know is, how crazy is the .4 on the purple powerbase’s massage feature?

One of the things that I always test for on a hybrid mattress is if I can feel the coils when I rub my hand on the sides of the bed.  The Purple hybrid has foam between the coils and the cover, so you won’t be able to feel the coils, and it will give the mattress nice edge support.  Personally, I don’t tie my shoes or get dressed on the side of a bed, and I’m pretty light, so edge support isn’t nearly as important to me as other factors.  That said, I’m impressed that they took the extra step to “hide the coils”.

PROS
• When you lie down on the Original Purple and then the Purple.2 and then the Purple.3 you find yourself drawn to the .3 and even tempted to get the .4.  Purple is really on to something.
CONS
•Purple.4 is 168 lbs for a queen size.  The original purple is 110 lbs and I HATE to move it around, it tacos on me (imagine it bends like a taco and falls over on me when I move it)
•Did I mention that it is EXPENSIVE?

Who Should Buy the Mattress?

People who have been considering the original Purple, but may be on the heavy side should look into the Purple .2

What Type of Bed Frame Works for this Mattress?

  • Solid Platform
  • Solid Foundation
  • Slatted Base

  • Adjustable Frame: I’m expecting good things as the regular Purple does really well on an adjustable frame.  They say that their powerbase’s massage feature is stronger than most massagers so that it can work with such a heavy mattress.

Purple trades under the ticker PRPL for about $11.50.  Their price to earnings multiple is an astounding 474.58 times their earnings.  For perspective, the S&P 500 is trading around 20 times earnings…It currently pays a dividend rate of 0%.  I would be a buyer of purple stock at around $1 or so, so I’ll have to wait.  You can read their 10-K (2017 annual financial report) Purple 2017 annual report

Highlights from their annual report:

Purple had a net loss of $2,327,000 in 2016 and they turned that around to a $803,000 gain in 2017

Total assets dropped from $155,821,000 to $122,281,000

Purple’s stock shot all the way up to $13.90 before the announcement that Sam Bernards had stepped down as the CEO on 3/15/18.  That announcement coupled with the release of the 8-K sent stocks down to $9.33 as of 3/19/18.  It’s now in the $5 dollar range after weaker than expected results in both the 1st and second quarters of 2018.

I listened to their last 2 quarterly report calls and my take on the calls was that they are growing so fast that they are prioritizing growth over profit at the moment.  What that signals to me, is that they are in it for the long term, they aren’t interested in just a cash grab.  Now, why would that be important to you?  I think this makes them more likely to be able to back up any manufacture defects or other issues that could benefit consumers.

The PE ratio is still crazy high, but their revenue growth of over 200% from 2016 to 2017 is extremely impressive.  Something spooked investors, and my bet is that the CEO change had the largest impact.

Reminder: not investment advice, just pointing out stuff that is public knowledge.

Purple Mattress Review (2018-I have had it for a year)

Purple Mattress Review (2018-I have had it for a year)

Purple Mattress Review (after a year)

When I started 2018, I went to my storage area and looked at all of the mattresses in there.  I knew in my mind which one I was going to pick out, but I spent some time looking at all of my options.  The last four mattresses that I had tested were hybrids, so I knew that I wasn’t going to pick one of those.  I dug around for awhile and realized the one I wanted was on the bottom of one of the stacks.  After the workout of moving things around, it was ready.  Well almost, my workout wasn’t complete as the Purple mattress is VERY heavy.  The materials are dense, so be prepared to sweat a bit when you unbox or move your purple mattress around.

I shot this video to show which mattress I choose when the decision is entirely up to me.

It’s just a personal preference.  If you don’t believe me I’ll show you my invoice:

Purple Mattress invoice

I bought my Purple Mattress!

Menu:

What is Inside the Mattress?

The Purple mattress is unlike any other mattress on the market.  It all starts with a stretchy 98% polyester white cover which also has 2% spandex in it.

Purple mattress cover

The bottom two layers are foam, 4″ of support at the base and 3″ in the middle.

Purple mattress layers

The top polymer layer will have a bit of powder in it when it ships.

It’s the top layer that really makes the Purple mattress unique.  In addition, it’s also the layer that is surrounded in controversy.

I’m sure that I’m not the first person to discuss the Purple powder issue, and I certainly won’t be the last.  For those of you who haven’t heard about it or for those who want a recap, I’ll go through the basics.

  • Purple’s Smart Comfort Grid is coated with a non-toxic polyethylene copolymer powder (say that three times fast)
  • Someone who is likely associated with a mattress rival released a video (which I’m sure you have seen as it has 1.8 Million views on Youtube) asking Purple what the story is with the powder.
  • Purple was unhappy with the videos and filed a lawsuit
  • Purple has released information about the powder on their blog.  Here is an excerpt snapshot.

Purple blog response to what's in the powder

non-toxic polyethylene copolymer powder

I’m way more afraid of dying while crossing the street than being killed by Purple’s non-toxic powder, but I guess there is a risk in everything we do in life. I’m still going to chance walking my dog to the dog park tomorrow even though I’ll have to cross the street.

When I cut the netting off the purple mattress I did discover the powder which purple admits putting on their smart comfort grid. They say on the purple blog that it is a non-toxic polyethylene copolymer powder. It keeps the “honeycombs like grid” from sticking together. You can see midway through the video that without the powder it will stick together, which would probably be uncomfortable while sleeping.

Sleep Test Results

Long story short, I hated the purple pillow, and purple seat cushion.  Take a guess at how I feel about the Purple mattress, or you can just watch and see…

Pros

  • Works well for a side sleeper.  You get a nice “waterbed” like hug, note there isn’t any water in the bed…
  • Works really well with an adjustable bed massage feature.

Actually if I had to put a Top mattresses list that conform well on an adjustable bed, The Purple would beat them all making the others not even close! I was very impressed by the way The Purple mattress moved, took shape and form on The Verge adjustable bed from Rize.  I think Purple should be one of the top suggestions when it comes to “which mattress is the most compatible with my adjustable bed”.  But here I am strongly suggesting it, so there.

Cons

  • Waterbed like motion transfer.  Of course, if your frame has a massage feature this could actually be considered a pro.
  • People on the heavy side may sink too far into the mattress.
  • It is really heavy, the tube that it comes in is a real challenge to “unbox”.  Worse, moving the mattress around makes me cringe, but I move mattresses around more frequently than most people.
  • When unboxed my son said “it smelled like a cake”.  That smell has long been gone, but it was the only time I have noticed anything like that while unboxing all of these mattresses.

Who Should Buy the Mattress?

So here’s the deal, Purple is MY go to mattress whenever I am in between reviewing mattresses. Kind of like recharging my batteries to get ready for my upcoming mattress to be sleep tested.

Typically, I sleep on a mattress for anywhere between 2 to 3 weeks than leave a review. While waiting for the next mattress to be tested to show up, and even though I have a descent amount of mattresses in my storage, I always pull out the Purple to lay down on. It is so comfortable I sometimes secretly wish why can’t I just sleep on it forever?

Thanks to its perfect blend of polyurethane foam and Hyper-Elastic Polymer The Purple mattress is suitable for both side and back sleepers, I haven’t tried to sleep on my tummy yet because I am a side/ back sleeper naturally, but I am willing to bet it is a great choice for stomach sleepers since it’s soft and flexible which means comfortable.

For Back Sleepers:

When you lie on your back, you want your spine to maintain its natural curve. This relieves pressure points and can help prevent back pain.  What’s cool about the Purple mattress is the “honeycomb” polymer top layer.  Since it creates little pockets you won’t get hot when you are sleeping on your back.

As for Side Sleepers:

When laying on your side, you really want your spine to be aligned. Straight spinal alignment helps you sleep better preventing side (hip and shoulder) pain.  As a a petite side sleeper this mattress is perfect!  It took a bit to grow on me, but it is now my go to sleep solution for when I’m not testing a mattress.  You may want to see where the Purple mattress placed on my Best mattress for side sleepers list.

The Side Sleeper’s Guide To Sleeping

Next to back sleeping, side sleeping is the next best thing. However, sleeping on the wrong mattress can put you in a world of pain and discomfort. So much discomfort like numb arms  and aching shoulders and sore backs. All this can be avoided by choosing to sleep on the right mattress.  45% of my audience sleeps on their side, do you?

To top it all off, The Purple sleeps COOL!

The key for deep sleep is always less stimuli. A mattress that is too hot or too cold will wake you up. Purple keeps you body elevated above the breathable grid AKA Hyper-elastic polymer™ Smart-Comfort Grid.

Purple breathes and promotes airflow to keep you sleeping soundly .

Ventilation is the key to sleeping just right—not too hot, and not too cold. Purple achieves the ultimate sleep comfortably by combining a totally new material with a totally unique design. Bottom line, Purple or not, to sleep cool get a mattress that breathes.

What Type of Bed Frame Works for this Mattress?

  • Solid Platform
  • Solid Foundation
  • Slatted Base
  • Adjustable Frame (Winner of all of the mattresses I tested in 2017)

I pulled my purple mattress out of storage yesterday to film part of a video on how various mattresses preform on my adjustable bed.  I wrote more details on my purple powerbase page, so I’ll just summarize here.

Out of all of the beds that I have tested on my adjustable base, the Purple mattress did the best job of conforming to the frame.  After testing and shooting that video, I had to sleep on it again.  My sleep experience was better than I remembered and so I needed to reevaluate some of the rankings that I had previously given it.  As a side note, I mention in my videos that we have a house divided, so as much as I love the Purple mattress, my husband hated it.  That all changed last night, a few different positions on the adjustable frame and he was converted.  So a guy who just didn’t like the “waterbed” feel of the Purple has been completely converted to a lover with just a little lift from the head part of the bed.

Not all adjustable frames have a massage feature, the purple powerbase does, as does the Rize Verge that I am using.  The Purple mattress’s motion transfer is poor; like a waterbed, small movements are felt by your partner.  However, when you turn on an adjustable frame’s massage feature this is a huge plus.  Typically, the massage feature sends most of the vibration to your back area, on the Purple Mattress you feel the vibrations throughout your whole body.  All of these reasons have led me to declare that the Purple Mattress was the best preforming mattress on my adjustable base.  I need to do some video editing still, but soon I’ll release my video so that you can see.  In the meantime, here is a photo showing how the purple mattress bends to fit on my adjustable frame.

Purple mattress on a zero g setting
The Purple mattress just needs a sturdy surface to sit on. This can be a platform, slats (make sure they are 3″ apart or less), box foundation opposed to a box spring (a box spring in this case can break down over time and cause the mattress to sag), an adjustable bed frame, or even the floor! Just make sure your mattress won’t be on a sagging frame or foundation and you are all set.

At the end it’s not just temperature! You also need your spine aligned

The walls that make up Purple’s Smart-Comfort Grid™ relax underneath pressure points while pulling to support areas like the lower back. This balances weight distribution and keeps the entire body in correct alignment.

And that’s the reason why I pull my Purple out of storage every once in a while. As much as I love hybrid mattresses there’s always this je ne sais quoi that makes me want to sleep on Purple.

Keep in mind if you are looking for a mattress that: Supports your back like a firm mattress and cradles your hips and shoulders like a soft mattress you have found what you are looking for with the Purple mattress. It’s like getting the best of both worlds: Firm + Soft

And then ask yourself:

Are you waking up with back, shoulder and neck pain? Are you tossing and turning and are restless at night? Maybe it’s time to invest in a Purple mattress.

Purple has fun promotions from time to time, sometimes they will offer free sheets or a seat cushion with the purchase of a mattress.  For free sheets.  They rotate through different freebies with their mattresses and this is my favorite.  I really enjoy the clinginess of their sheets.  Fair warning though if you sleep with a partner you may need to tuck them in, or else you will find yourself fighting for them.  In addition, I offer a $25 off Purple mattress coupon when purchased through these links.

I expect Purple to have a big push for Thanksgiving and I’m hoping that they do the same pick the item that they ran for July 4th.  Currently they are offering a free sheet set with purchase, but if they offered all of their side items I would go with the travel seat cushion as it is football season.

The Purple Bed – Queen Size Mattress will be shipped to rana landreth by Amazon.com.
Guaranteed delivery: Aug. 9, 2017
$999 is a pretty steep price for a queen mattress, but I’m going to give it a fair shot, maybe it will surprise me

The bag is HEAVY!  I can’t imagine how much heavier it must be in king size.  The top has a zipper, but you need to cut the mattress out of the bag.  Well that’s what the instructions say, so I tried to see if it would slide out of the bag when lifted and one end, but that didn’t work.  Luckily, Purple provides a handy box opener, which I have only seen included with the Nectar mattress so far.  Per instructions the box opener will cut through the outside bag so that you can get to the mattress.  After that it’s standard mattress opening.  Before I show you the unboxing video, let’s talk about the issue that is probably on your mind.

Purple vs. Honest Mattress Reviews lawsuit

The original Purple ships to Canada, it is a bit more expensive to cover the additional shipping.

I recreated the Human Egg Drop Test, you can watch it here.

I just tested out the Purple Mattress Protector.  It did two things that amazed me.  First, it stretched over a 15″ thick mattress.  Second, I intentionally created a giant wine spill on it and it kept my mattress clean.  It is a steal at $59 for a queen size mattress protector.

A cool article on Seeking alpha about the growing presence of Purple mattresses in Mattress Firm.  It is interesting that the Purple .3 & Purple .4 aren’t sold there.  The one thing that the article doesn’t mention is a huge advantage that Mattress Firm’s online option the Tulo has.  The Tulo has nationwide distribution with mattress firm so they can promise 2 day delivery anywhere in the US.  Since Purple isn’t in all of the Mattress Firm locations the probably can’t match the same distribution advantage.  This is likely to change as Purple and Mattress Firm grow their relationship.  Is this article responsible for a 10% increase in PRPL stock today (4/30/18)?

Warning not investment advice, just public data: Purple trades under the ticker PRPL.  Personally, I like to buy stock in things that I use and believe in (so I am considering buying PRPL).  Unfortunately, the Price to earnings ratio for PRPL is WAY too high for me to jump in at the current price of $9.33 per share on 3/21/18.  Plus Thomson Reuters just gave them a Negative outlook, so it looks like I’ll be waiting for a while to get a hold of some PRPL.  Thomson Reuters 2017 PRPL.  When compared to others in the home furnishings retailers industry they state: “the debt to capital of 95.7% for PRPL is the highest”.  So currently a lot of debt to finance their amazing (200% year over year growth) growth.  Plus Sam Bernards stepped down as CEO about a week ago.

Can I test out a Purple Mattress before I buy it?

There are a few mattress firm locations that carry the purple so that you can test it out in your store.  The current problem is that they are not available nationwide.  They just launched in Chicago, Phoenix, San Francisco , Fresno, Austin, DC and Sacramento.

I have been to 3 locations in Phoenix/Scottsdale that carry Purple products, and I’m going to say that they have a different feel and a different kind of buzz.  Seriously, the Purple products pull in a younger demographic of buyers that are ready to purchase before they even test the products.  It is really fun to be a secret shopper!

They Mattress Firm locations that carry Purple products are boldly presenting them, there is always signage like Purple is here on the front, sometimes even on the sides of the locations.  Then when you get in the sections that are allocated to Purple really stand out.  You won’t find any difficulty finding the Purple section in a Mattress Firm.
