Best Mattress for Back Sleepers

Finding the Best Mattress For Back Sleepers

I sleep on my back less than 10% of the time, so this list is a little bit of what I think back sleepers would prefer mixed in with what I like to sleep on when I have to sleep on my back.  Long story short, I’m a side sleeper.  That said, I have slept on each of these mattresses for at least 2 weeks and in the case of 3 of them much longer than that.

Does it surprise you to know that only 4% of the people I surveyed sleep on their backs?

Unlike many of the review sites out there, I sleep test every mattress that I review for about 2 weeks. This means that I can only get to 20-25 mattresses per year, so I am pretty selective about the ones that I choose to test. Everyone has different sleep preferences and there is no one solution for every sleeper.  Let’s discuss the best mattresses for back sleepers!

Best Mattress for Back Sleepers

I’m a side sleeper so I don’t spend as much time on my back. However, now that I have discovered adjustable bed frames (like the one I currently have); I am able to spend much more time sleeping on my back.

Back sleeping is considered the healthiest way to sleep; however, very few of us sleep this way. I find that some mattresses can trick me into waking up on my back, so those beds are looking out for me. Back sleepers need that goldilocks feel, it can’t be too soft or they will sink in too much. They will also find themselves in an uncomfortable situation if the mattress is too firm. Back sleepers are searching for a medium firmness level, with above average cooling tech in the mattress. Some of the cooling tech that a back sleeper should keep an eye out for:

This link will take you to a human egg drop test that I tried in my bedroom.

A back sleeper is “using” more surface area of the mattress, so they have a potential to heat up; therefore all of my picks for this category have cooling tech in them. Another issue that Back Sleepers commonly face is SNORING. I have suffered many sleepless nights due to my husband’s snoring, that is until recently. Do you want to know what has cured his snoring? Of course, you do, you may even be suffering from the same situation. Hurry up RANA!

My adjustable bed’s anti snore position! Seriously, I hear a snore, I wake up grab the remote and with one touch the bed’s head position raises a few inches and the problem is solved. I’m in search of an adjustable bed that is integrated with smart technology so that it will automatically adjust. I believe that I found this solution at the CES in Las Vegas. I haven’t had the chance to put it to the full test, but I’m extremely excited to try it.

Bed Size

      • Twin: A twin will measure 39″X 75″. Your basic set up for children and a spare bedroom with limited space
      • Full: 54″ X 75″, which is a good size for teenagers as long as you don’t expect them to grow to six feet tall.
      • Queen: 60″ X 80″. It fits two adults, but you had really better like each other as you will be very close.
      • King: 76″ X 80″. This gives two adults more space, but has the same amount of leg room (height) as a queen.
      • California King: 72″ X 84″. This will give plenty of room to two adults and allow people in the 6’6″ range the ability to sleep on a bed without dangling their feet off the end.
For more information on mattresses sizes go to my size comparison page.

        Our Rating Criteria

We use 10 categories to rate the mattresses we sleep test. Each category is scored 1-10. Unlike other reviewers we aren’t scared to give a mattress a low score if it is deserved. If I spend 2 weeks sleeping on a mattress that consistently gives me back pain, you will read about it on my review!

        Packaging/Shipping:

First Impressions count right? Some of the mattresses come in boxes, and some come in over sized bags. I prefer boxes as they are much easier to move around. Some boxes have cute logos and some have really fun quotes, and yes I really made a video called box vs. box vs. box in a box. Try saying it fast three times in a row. Did you get tongue tied?

        Smell

On the subject of first impressions, some of the mattresses will have a bit of an odor when they are unboxed. Most people use the term off-gassing to describe it. Some of the mattresses take a few days for the smell to go away and sometimes it is barely noticeable.

        Comfort

When you lay on a mattress and it’s not comfortable that’s surely something that we should point out right? If I’m having trouble sleeping on a bed, I’ll tell you that. If I can’t sleep on a mattress I will scream to high heaven that you need to steer clear of a mattress if you have a similar sleep profile as I do (petite side sleeper). Remember, just because it doesn’t work for me doesn’t mean that it won’t work for you.

This is a key category to focus on when you are going through my various reviews. The more mattress that I sleep test the larger my comparison database gets. If you ask me about 2 mattresses that I have tested, I can instantly tell you which one was more comfortable to me.

        Support

I have had a ton of mattresses which fail to give me the proper support. There is nothing worse than falling into a deep depression that you have to climb out of. Sometimes you can even get multiple sinking parts and huge mountains in between, clearly not ideal for restful sleep. I test for support with:

        • weights
        • sitting on the edges and corners
        • jumping/standing/walking on the mattress

If I fall all the way through the mattress to the ground, it won’t score very high. Conversely, if I hardly notice any sinking in the mattress it will get a high score.

Recently we added adjustable base tests to our review process. How do different mattresses stand up to the test?

Have you ever walked into a mattress retailer? Of course, you have! Did you notice that almost every mattress is now on an adjustable base? This is the wave of the future, I know that I will never sleep on a bed frame that isn’t adjustable. Sure, I’ll test different frames and foundations, but my go to sleep set will always be adjustable. It’s hard to explain, but once you try one you won’t go back. I even credit my adjustable frame with curing my husband’s snoring with just a click of the anti-snore button on my remote.

        Company

With the hundreds of new brands that have popped up over the last few years it is difficult to sort through them. I’m putting in the leg work to figure out which companies are connected to each other. In doing so I can help determine the expected longevity of each of these mattress companies. If I don’t think a mattress company is going to make it in the long term, then I won’t expect their warranty to hold up. A company my promote a forever warranty, but if it closes down in six months you surely won’t be able to get your bed replaced.

        • I use Fakespot to see if companies are planting fake reviews. You will be amazed by some of the results some of these online retailers get on fakespot.
        • I research other review sites to see which ones are owned by mattress companies. For example; Sleepopolis, mattress clarity and slubersearch are all connected to Casper.
        • Community outreach by the company: I love companies that give back to their communities. If your company is holding an event for the community in the Phoenix area let me know and I’ll cover it.
        • Customer support: If a company has poor communication or support, you will read about it here or hear about it on my video reviews.
        • Warranty: the companies in our top categories all score highly in the warranty field. If we don’t think a company will be around to honor their warranty they won’t be included on our list.

        Motion Transfer

When I’m standing on a bed and a wine glass doesn’t move when I walk near it, it will score high on this test. A high number is great for when you have a partner who is tossing and turning and not disturbing you. On our scale from 1-10, one is a waterbed, 10 is; wait what? There is someone in the same bed as me!

        Sleep Quality

If I’m not able to sleep on a mattress, then it’s possible that you may have the same issues. This is really the most important category that a buyer should be focused on. It is nice when a bed is well constructed or made by a reputable company. However, if you can’t sleep on it, you are going to find yourself shopping for a new bed sooner than planned.

        Stays Cool

I live in Scottsdale; Arizona and I’ll tell you a little secret about the weather here… It gets hot in the summer. Having a breathable mattress is a must here. There aren’t a ton of things worse than having extra heat rising up from your mattress making your back or side sweat. I’m a huge fan of talalay latex, gel infusions, and alternative construction (like Leesa’s Avena foam).

        Materials/Durability

Surely what’s inside the mattress matters right? I also pay close attention to the covers. Size matters; the Casper Essential is 8.5″ while the DreamCloud is a full 15“. Almost double the thickness of the mattress, but is it double the price as well (no)?

        Value

You really have to look at the prices of the mattress vs. the competition. Not just the direct to consumer, bed in a box model, but the in-store values as well. The bed in a box model offers consumers huge cost savings vs. buying from the store. This is because the middle man is cut out and the companies don’t have to pay electricity and rent.

We give each category a score from 1-10 with 10 being the highest. I am using a 10 point must system. The mattress that preformed the best in a category gets a 10 and all other mattresses are judged against that standard.

        Mattress Firmness Scale

We also assess the overall firmness of a mattress from 1-10 with 10 being almost rock hard firm. Since different people have different preferences on the firm level that works best for them, that number doesn’t go into the total ratings. Here is our Firmness scale as of 5/2/18

        Mattress firmness scale 2018
Recently, we noticed that just about every mattress you see in the store is staged on an adjustable frame. These giant retailers must be on to something right? So, we decided that every mattress we test should also go through a few cycles of adjustments with our adjustable bed. Currently we are using a Rize Verge. We assume that other adjustable frames will have many of the same characteristics. What we have found is that some mattresses don’t fare well on an adjustable frame, while others take a step up to a new level.

If you haven’t been on an adjustable frame you are really missing out, so we feel that it is crucial to our review process to add this wrinkle. We understand that everyone doesn’t have an adjustable bed, but if you are considering one with your next mattress purchase we feel you should be prepared. If a mattress is too thick or sturdy, it likely won’t perform well on an adjustable base. If it has interlocked coils, forget about it.

Why Buy a Mattress Online?

  • It will ship directly to you, most of the time for free
  • Do you really enjoy having a mattress salesman follow you around and check you out as you try out all of the mattresses? The answer is NO
  • Wouldn’t you rather take some time to test a mattress rather than just be lead around by the salesman to the highest commission bed he sells? Most online retailers offer a trial period of 100 days or more to test out your new mattress.
  • Same quality mattress for a fraction of the cost.
  • You have more time to comparison shop from your home.

DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress

DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress

DreamCloud Mattress Review

This is one of my favorite categories, a luxury hybrid mattress.  I love the extra stability that comes from pocketed coils.  I challenge you to find a mattress that is 15″ or greater, and will ship to your door at a price of $1,399 ($1,199 after our discount coupon below).  It’s hard to do, but let’s pretend that you can find one.  Does the mattress that you found have a 365 day trial period?  Does it have a six month lease to own included with that trial period?  I’m guessing the answer is no.  That’s why it is so easy to recommend the DreamCloud.

Here are my thoughts after sleeping on the DreamCloud:

You aren’t going to get married to the bed, if for some reason it just doesn’t work for you contact DreamCloud and they will arrange for your mattress to get picked up and given to a local charity.  There is nothing to lose on this.  The company has to be extremely confident in their product to send it out with such a no hassle experience for the customer.  The biggest drawback that I can think of for the DreamCloud is that they may end up selling too many of these.  As we have seen before companies that are just too successful at selling tend to have some growing pains.  Those pains generally show up in the form of shipping delays.  Currently, DreamCloud isn’t experiencing shipping days so you should expect delivery within 5-7 business days.  Mine shipped to me in 2 DAYS!

What is Inside the Mattress?

My DreamCloud mattress review wouldn’t be complete without stating that it is a 15” luxury hybrid mattress combining the best of latex, memory foam, hand crafted Cashmere, tufting and coil technology to provide the best sleep money can buy.

The DreamCloud isn’t messing around with the term Luxury.  This mattress boasts 8 layers of cover, foam, latex and individually pocketed coils.

a look inside the 8 layers of the 15 inch dreamcloud mattress

  • Let’s start from the top with the cashmere cover.
  • The second layer is a layer of cooling gel memory foam
  • Third layer brings us a quilted memory foam so that you can sink in a bit into the mattress
  • For the fourth layer the DreamCloud is loaded with a natural latex, which will help bring the mattress that bit of bounciness that I love.
  • The fifth layer brings some support to the mattress with what they call Dreamplush supporting memory foam
  • The sixth layer is a super dense foam that is setting the stage for the pocketed micro coils below
  • Seventh layer is where the real magic happens.  They have separated their pocketed micro coils into 5 different zones, making ideal support for many different types of sleepers.
  • Like the sixth layer the 8th layer is needed to support the pocketed coils.  This layer is similar in that it is high density foam
Layers of the DreamCloud Rana on the edge of a DreamCloud Sleep Mattress
  • They also have reinforced edges, which is something I dream about when I test out hybrid mattresses.  I love the feel of “hidden” coils.  I enjoy the additional support of the coils, but the DreamCloud takes it up a notch by making sure that you can’t feel them.  It’s a huge win for those of us who sit on the edge of the bed to put on our shoes and socks!

Each DreamCloud is hand-tufted.  A process that is usually reserved for super high end mattresses that typically cost $4,000-6,000.  This process takes up to 2 hours to complete, and ensures that the mattress will have consistent firmness.  The result is a mattress that won’t have the soft spots that are probably causing you to search for a mattress today.

The DreamCloud meets all US CPSC fire resistance and flammability standards.

I discovered 2 things today when I moved the DreamCloud into my spare bedroom (so I can test a new mattress).

  1. It is Sturdy and will stand on its side without any assistance.  Many other mattresses do what I call “Tacoing”.  They kind of collapse on themselves, and fold into the shape of a taco.  Picture a mattress folding up on me.  Trust me it happens.  There is no chance that a DreamCloud will taco.
  2. Here is the shocker, when was the last time you looked at the bottom of your mattress?  Never…  Well, you can see in my video that the bottom is way more luxurious than you would expect:

The mattress isn’t flippable, but the bottom cover is nice enough that you could sleep on it if you wanted to.  There is so much attention to detail put in this mattress.  If you haven’t caught on, this mattress SCREAMS luxury.

Sleep Test Results

This mattress has universal appeal and is good for all types of sleepers.  This is my clear favorite for the hybrid category.  It is also my top pick for best mattresses for big and tall people, yeah I put that to the test also with someone three times my size.

PROS

  • Handles on each side
  • Unbeatable Price
  • Hand Tufted
  • 365 Day Sleep Trial
  • Foam encased outer edges, so you can’t feel the coils
  • Professional cleaning service (after one year)
  • Reconditioning after 5 years
  • Best mattress for big and tall people

CONS

  • Some adjustable beds work better with thinner mattresses (Update the DreamCloud adjustable base is strong enough to make their mattress work properly)
  • King Size mattresses will take 2 strong adults to set up/unbox

Who Should Buy the Mattress?

A key difference between the DreamCloud and other luxury hybrid mattresses is their lease to own program.  This is a no credit check program.  If you have a job, and a bank account you can get a DreamCloud and pay for it over a six month time period.  This really works well with their trial period.  They wouldn’t have both of those generous programs if they didn’t think that they were building a great product at a great price.  The DreamCloud essentially earns a place in your bedroom each month.  If you aren’t satisfied they will refund your money and arrange for the mattress to go to a local charity.

It works for petite people like me, but where it really shines is in the Big and Tall category.  I get questions all of the time about what type of mattress is best for a person of X size and Y height.  I have been searching high and low for a mattress that fits people in the big and tall group.  The day I unboxed my DreamCloud I knew that it could handle a large person, so I decided to put it to the ultimate test.  Enter my friend Clinton.  Well see for yourself and then I’ll go through the details:

He is about 6’8″ tall and weighs in at around 350 pounds.  The people at DreamCloud were confident that their bed would work for a person that big so they sent him one and let him sleep test it.  Fast forward a few weeks and see how happy he is on it.  Initially, he was a bit worried as his last 3 mattresses have failed on him.  I assured him that he would get a luxury mattress that will hold up to his size.  Is there a better fit for a giant than sleeping on a cloud?

Why you should consider buying the DreamCloud!

The name says it all, DreamCloud~ so dreamy !

Say goodbye to tossing and turning and grab your one way ticket to DreamCloud. Finally, a well-crafted sturdy yet luxurious and comfortable mattress at an AFFORDABLE price, all in one.

And as if that wasn’t enough, the DreamCloud warranty is one of the strongest warranties in the mattress industry, it’s Everlong. They will even re-condition and clean it for as long as you own and use it. Dream Cloud also offers 365 free night trial and free shipping and returning (but this one is a keeper, there won’t be any returning here).

You are one click away to getting the perfect coil and foam combo in one high quality mattress you can finally afford. So stop dreaming of the perfect bed and get that plush cloud feel you’ve been looking for right now.

What Type of Bed Frame Works for this Mattress?

  • Solid Platform
  • Solid Foundation
  • Slatted Base
  • Adjustable Frame
  • Floor

The thickness of the mattress, a full 15″, makes it a bit of a struggle for an adjustable base.  I’m hoping that it needs a little more time to break in, but in the first week of testing the DreamCloud is in the good tier of adjustable bed conformity.

Their everlong warranty doesn’t encourage “unusual” places for your mattress.  They are funny about it though, as they may add you to their affiliate program if your DreamCloud is in an unusual place.

Price Table

Unboxing

A few things about unboxing:

  • It is a serious workout, they packed a lot of bed into a small and very heavy bag.  Make sure you invite a friend over to help you “unbag” it.  Also take some pictures, I’m sure the folks at DreamCloud would love to add them to their website.
  • I live in Arizona which is just a few states over from their distribution center in Washington State.  My shipping time was only 2 DAYS!  I’m sure if you are on the east coast it will take a few days longer.
  • Be patient and gently remove both bags, without cutting into them.  Each of them can be repurposed for storage or something fun like camping.

DreamCloud Bag

DreamCloud mattress in a bag on my bed

The Queen sized mattress is heavy, but I was able to move it around with my husband.  The California King size is in another league.  It is so heavy that shipping and moving it require 2 adult males to move it around.  It is heavy enough that it may ship on a pallet for additional support.

I used the DreamCloud in my best mattress protector video.  I was scared that the mattress protectors that I used could fail and mess up my mattress, but I selected it because I knew that DreamCloud offers a one time cleaning service (I made that bold in the pros section above).  Worst case scenario, I could have tested that service out.  Fortunately, I didn’t need to as the mattress protectors did their job and kept it clean.  If you decide to watch that video skip to about 10:25 to see how much liquid was pooling in the tufted section of the DreamCloud.  I thought for sure that the liquid would get through the mattress protector.

DreamCloud just released an adjustable bed.  It is the first adjustable bed that works well with the dreamcloud mattress.  Generally thick mattresses don’t do a great job of bending on weaker adjustable frames.  Well they solved this by getting a really strong adjustable frame to move it around.  Here is how they look together:
