Cover & top fabric: Tencel™ (Lyocell)
The outermost fabric (the side you sleep on) is made of Tencel™ (also known as lyocell). This is a regenerated cellulose fiber produced from sustainably sourced wood pulp, making it an eco-friendly choice. Using Tencel in a mattress protector helps mitigate one of the usual downsides of waterproof protectors — heat retention. Because Tencel is more breathable than synthetic fabrics, it helps maintain comfort and avoid overheating and sweating.
Inner padding: Patented down-alternative / polyester blend
Between the cover and the waterproof membrane, DreamCloud inserted a quilted pad. This pad is a patented down-alternative / polyester blend, which adds softness, cushion, and a quilted feel (rather than just a flat matte sheet).
This padding helps the protector feel less like a thin barrier and more like an added thin mattress layer — which is a very unique offering for a mattress protector. It adds a very thin layer of soft comfort to your mattress and carries none of the thin and crinkly feel most protectors carry.
Waterproof backing: Polyurethane membrane
The critical function — waterproofing — comes from a polyurethane (PU) backing, or membrane. This backing acts as a barrier that keeps liquids from penetrating while allowing body moisture to pass — enabling breathability.
Fit and structural elements
Stretch side panels: To accommodate thicker mattresses (up to 17″), the protector includes stretch side walls to ensure the cover wraps fully around the sides. Note that those side panels are not waterproof, which is a normal design – their function is to keep the protector in place, while providing some barrier against dirt and dust.
Wide silicone-elastic band: A broad elastic band helps anchor the protector securely in place. It provide complete stability during our test.
Certifications: The fabrics are certified by OEKO-TEX® and the Global Recycled Standard, meaning they are free from harmful substances and include recycled content.

Waterproof Abilities
DreamCloud claims that their Tencel Mattress Protector is waterproof so we put it to the test by spilling a cup of water on it and letting it stand for 5 minutes. At the 5-minute mark, no moisture had gone through the protector or reached the mattress!
The polyurethane backing is what gives it its waterproof properties. It effectively keeps stains, wear & tear, and liquids from reaching the mattress below.
Compared to cheaper protectors that rely on vinyl or polyethylene (which tend to be less breathable and crack over time), this polyurethane membrane is a premium solution. Many high-end mattress protectors use similar membrane technology to balance waterproofing and breathability.

Even the best waterproofing is moot if sleeping on the protector feels like sleeping on a plastic sheet. So the feel is crucial.
Surface feel (top layer)
Because the top layer is Tencel™, it feels much smoother, softer, and cooler than traditional polyester fabrics. We found the DreamCloud Waterproof Tencel Mattress Protector to be silky and gentle against the skin. This is a major advantage as you are not just getting a protective cover, you’re adding a soft and cozy surface to sleep on.
Cushion and quilting
The quilted down-alternative pad is a nice and unique touch — it gives the protector some “body” and cushioning, so it doesn’t feel like an ultra-thin film hugging your mattress. That quilting adds a slight plushness to the feel of your mattress, making the sleep experience more akin to having a thin mattress topper rather than a bare cover.
While you will not notice a significant change to the overall mattress firmness or contouring, it prevents that cheap protector “crinkly plastic” sensation and noise you may be used to.
