Spinealign hybrid mattress review

Airweave Mattress - Composition

The Airweave Mattress’ construction is the most unique out there. It allows for full customization of each sleeper’s side. We also love it for how transportable it makes the mattress – simply unzip and fold the mattress cover, fold the thin comfort layer, and pack each block for easy moves!

Zippable Outer Cover

  • Outer cover: Made of 100% soft, thick polyester, offering a durable yet breathable surface.

  • Inner cover: A liner comprised of 60% modacrylic and 40% glass fiber, acting as a fire-barrier and helping stabilize the blocks within.

These covers zip neatly around the core, allowing for easy removal, cleaning, and access to the internal components for customization.

Comfort Layer

The original Airweave mattress includes an optional soft layer, made of 100% polyester, that functions like a pillow-top. When inside the cover (between cover and blocks), it adds a plusher feel; when left out, it offers a firmer experience.

The difference between the Airweave Mattress (the one reviewed here) and the Airweave Advanced Mattress, is that it includes 1 comfort layer, vs. 2 in the Advanced, for a slightly plusher option.

6 Dual-Sided Airfiber® Blocks

The core is built with Airweave’s proprietary Airfiber technology—essentially high-density polyethylene blocks, interwoven and containing about 90% air, making them highly breathable. That polyethylene is 100% food-grade non-toxic plastic and inspired by the founder’s fishing lines.

Each sleeper lays on top of 3 Airfiber blocks, totally 6 in the mattress, except in the Twin and Twin XL (3 blocks only). Those blocks each have 2-sided firmness, allowing each sleeper to flip the blocks to fully customize the comfort across zones like shoulders, waist, and legs.

Airweave Mattress Sleep Tests

Everything we felt in one box

Firmness Temperature Maintenance Sleeping Style Bed Base
Adjust the feel with or without the comfort layer, and rearrange the dual-sided blocks to fine-tune the firmness between firm (7.5 to 8/10) and extra-firm (9 to 10/10). Overall, however, this is the firmest mattress we have ever tested at Non-Biased Reviews.
With Airfiber’s 90% air composition, the Airweave mattress offers incredible airflow and breathability, keeping you cool and comfortable—even if you overheat at night or live in hot climate.
Machine-washable covers and hose-washable core blocks make the Airweave mattress one of the most hygienic and easy-to-maintain mattresses on the market. And if you move often, it is easy to “break apart” for convenient transportation and/or storage.
The Airweave Mattress is ideal for all stomach sleepers, as well as back sleepers over 130 lbs. Combination sleepers will love how effortless it is to turn. Heavier folks and those suffering from back pain will also do really well on it. Side-sleepers and some lower-weight folks should look for a softer mattress offering more pressure relief.
The Airweave Mattress fits on all bases (foundation, slats, box springs, platform) and the floor.

Firmness

The original Airweave Mattress is the firmest mattress we have tested at Non-Biased Reviews and one of the firmest on the market. Self-described as extra-firm, ranking a 10/10 on the firmness scale, by Airweave themselves, we have rated it between a 7.5 to 8/10 at his softest, and a solid 9 to 10/10 at its firmest.

For the softer feel, which is still a firm mattress ideal for stomach sleepers and back sleepers over 130 lbs, include the comfort layer on top of the blocks, and turn all blocks to their softer side. For a very firm sleeping experience, you can completely remove the comfort layer and turn all block to their firmest side!

We love that each sleeper can independently customize their firmness by configuring the blocks of their side of the bed to their exact needs and preference.

If you are a hot sleeper, the Airweave Mattress may be your best companion! It is impressively made of 90% air, with an Airfiber that is completely open cell. When looking inside, it looks like thick fishing lines all intertwined with air flowing through from all directions and through the entire mattress.

Its core’s open-air structure ensures exceptional airflow, which further flows in and out of the mattress through its comfort layer and covers, keeping the mattress cooler than many memory-foam or hybrid models, and helping hot sleepers stay comfortable no matter the weather.

Motion Transfer

The motion transfer is very well isolated on the Airweave Mattress since each sleeper has his/her own three Airfiber blocks. As they do not connect with the other partner’s, the movement of one person does not transfer any motion to his/her partner’s side of the bed.

Maintenance & Care

Nearly 100% of your Airweave Mattress Advanced can be washed. Here is how:

  • the outer mattress cover and its comfort layer can be machine washed and air dried
  • the Airfiber blocks are easily washed in your shower or tub, by rinsing with cool water and a mild detergent, or even hosed down outside. If you need to disinfect, wipe them down with a cloth and ethyl alcohol (bleach can even be used for special sanitization) – they are made of food grade non-toxic plastic and air dry quickly

Who Is The Airweave Mattress Good For?

Best Fit:

  • Back sleepers who want firm support to maintain spinal alignment. We recommend it to back sleepers over 130 lbs. Lower-weight back sleepers may be looking for slightly more softness, unless you have a personal preference for very firm mattresses

  • Stomach sleepers, due to its firmness and support profile that keeps hips aligned of stomach sleepers of all sizes

  • Hot sleepers, because of the breathability and airflow properties allowing the covers to remain cool and the body to regulate its own temperature

  • Combination sleepers (back/stomach), due to its responsiveness and ease of movement. The Airfiber makes moving around easy and effortless, allowing for less sleep disruption while tossing around

  • Those seeking a durable, easily cleaned mattress—e.g., athletes, kids, allergy-sensitive users

Less Ideal For:

  • Side sleepers, who will likely find this too firm and lacking pressure relief at hips and shoulders

  • Sleepers who prefer plush or contouring mattresses, such as fans of memory foam

  • Lowerweight sleepers, who typically prefer a softer mattress that provides more pressure relief and less support

Airweave was started in 2007 by Japanese businessman Motokuni Takaoka, after taking over his uncle’s fishing line business upon graduating from Stanford University. He soon realized that the resin fiber used in fishing lines could be applied to the mattress industry to create a new sleeping surface built for health and recovery. The Ariweave mattress was born!

We love that the Airweave mattress can be customized in firmness by moving around the three Airfiber blocks underneath each sleeper. It comes in all residential sizes from Twin to California King.

Shipping is free and returns can be arranged from day 14 until day 60 after receiving your Airweave mattress. Note that a $199 shipping charge and 15% recycling fee applies to your return.

At check-out, you have the option to upgrade to a softer Luxe version (firm feeling) of the Airweave mattress, or spend a little more for even more softness (medium-firm) with a Pillow Top. This will add between $275 and $745 depending on the comfort level and size of the mattress. No option to upgrade the Twin.

Airweave Mattress

The Airweave Mattress is a standout in the firm mattress category thanks to its breathable Airfiber core, washable design, and customizable comfort zones. It excels for back and stomach sleepers, hot sleepers, and those looking for a clean, supportive, and long-lasting bed.

We also love how easy it is to pack up when moving – simply unzip the cover, box the blocks and fold the comfort layer and covers for a much easier transfer than hauling around a large and heavy mattress.

However, if you crave plush cushioning, deep contouring, or are a side sleeper or lower-weight individual, you may find the Airweave mattress too rigid for comfort. That said, its unique modularity makes it one of the most adjustable firm mattresses on the market.

The PLUSES The MINUSES
  • Ultra-firm support, excellent for back & stomach sleepers

  • Highly breathable, stays cool even without cooling gels or other technologies

  • Customizable firmness (7.5 to 10/10) via optional soft layer and adjustable blocks configuration

  • Durable construction, with solid materials and good longevity

  • Responsive and portable, easy to move and set up

  • Minimal off-gassing, ready to use right after setup

  • Too firm for many, especially side sleepers and those who prefer cushioning

  • Thin profile (8″) may not suit heavier individuals

  • Premium pricing, especially in larger sizes

  • Return fees are quite expensive in case you are unhappy during your trial period
